Challenge
Export reports sent by Veeam Explorer for Microsoft Exchange are illegible or unexpectedly contain Chinese characters.
Cause
The issue is caused by an encoding conflict. By default, Veeam Explorer for Microsoft Exchange uses UTF-16 character encoding, and the issue appears under following circumstances:
- Use of Mimecast or Thunderbird
- Office 365 organization located in Microsoft Azure China or Germany regions.
Solution
Export Report encoding can be changed for Veeam Explorer for Microsoft Exchange.
To change Export Report email encoding, perform the following:
- Navigate to the folder %programdata%\Veeam\Backup\ExchangeExplorer\
- Create a new file named Config.xml (If the Config.xml file already exists, edit it.)
- Enter the following text:
<Veeam>
<Email MessageHeadersEncoding="UTF-8" MessageSubjectEncoding="UTF-8" MessageBodyEncoding="UTF-8" />
</Veeam>
- Save the Config.xml file
- Perform an Export and confirm the Export Report email is legible
