Best practices for deduplicating storage systems

$

Challenge

The following Veeam technologies are dependent on primary backup storage random I/O performance:
  • Instant VM Recovery
  • Windows and Linux File Level Recovery
  • Cloud Tier
  • Cloud Mobility
  • DataLabs
  • SureBackup
  • Staged Restore
  • Universal Restore (U-AIR)
  • On-Demand Sandbox
  • Secure Restore
  • Backup and Backup Copy Jobs when configured with one of the following:
  • Health Check
  • Compact processing
  • Synthetic Fulls
  • Forever Forward Incremental (Merges)
  • Reverse Incremental
  • Backup to Tape Jobs, specifically when performed with synthesized fulls
  • Replication when performed from backup as a source
  • Backup Copy Job processing on source side

Cause

Applying deduplication to storage systems is a technique used to reduce the space required to maintain a desired backup retention. Deduplicating storage systems are often optimized for sequential write operations and can offer high ingest rates, however, there can be a trade off in the form of higher latency when random read operations are required, as they are with the list of features above.

Solution

When using Veeam with a deduplicating storage system a best practice can be to have a non-duplicating storage system as the primary backup target for the most recent restore points and then use backup copy jobs for long term retention.
It is important to note that while this is Veaam’s general recommendation, there is a wide array of different hardware deduplication options, some of which have Veeam specific features enabled or are built with solid state drives to improve random read performance. Because of this, Veeam encourages an in-depth recovery time and recovery point requirements discussion with a value-added reseller or the hardware manufacturer to determine how best to leverage deduplicating storage.
Veeam has worked with strategic alliance partners to list these use cases and offer several architecture options to meet the needs of any scenario.
  • Best Practices for Hewlett Packard Enterprise StoreOnce <link tbd>
  • Best Practices for Dell/EMC Data Domain <link tbd>
  • Best Practices for Exagrid
  • Best Practices for Quantum DXi <link tbd>

NOTE: Veeam supports the general use of all storages, including deduplication appliances. For a list of devices known to be compatible through testing, please see the Veeam Ready Program.

How to force form-based authentication in Enterprise Manager

$
0
0

Challenge

In v9 of Enterprise Manager, you might get an authentication prompt similar to the one below (the look of the prompt depends on your internet browser).
To force the use of HTML form-based authentication, use the solution below.
User-added image

Cause

The window is shown due to the automatic NTLM-based authentication method introduced in v9.

Solution

For 9.5 update 4 and later form-based authentication can be disabled solely by changing value of the following parameter in web.config file ( default location C:\Program Files\Veeam\Backup and Replication\Enterprise Manager\WebApp) to false:
<add key="useWindowsAuth" value="true"></add>

For earlier versions:
  1. Open the Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager console on your Enterprise Manager server.
  2. Locate the VeeamBackup site.
  3. In the Default Document options, add Login.aspx to the top of the list.
  4. In the Authentication options, disable Forms Authentication method.
  5. In the Modules, remove the MixedAuthenticationModule2 module.
  6. Open the following files using notepad and replace "<a href="/">Home</a>" with "<a href="/default.aspx">Home</a>" :
    %programfiles%\Veeam\Backup and Replication\Enterprise Manager\WebApp\js\veeam-configuration.js
    %programfiles%\Veeam\Backup and Replication\Enterprise Manager\WebApp\js\release\app.min.js
  7. Restart the VeeamBackup website using IIS and clear the cache of your Internet browser.

More Information

Alternatively, you can go directly to the page at https://enterprise-manager:9443/login.aspx.

NTLM-based method automatically logs in the current user if the following conditions are met:
1) The computer you are using to access Enterprise Manager and EM itself are in the same AD domain
2) The user has permissions to access Enterprise Manager

Consistent backup failures after installing vSphere 6.7 U1

$
0
0

Challenge

After updating vCenter to 6.7U1, processing of all VMs fails with "Object reference not set to an instance of an object."

Cause

The issue is triggered by an update to the vSphere API version in vCenter 6.7 U1.

Solution

Please upgrade to Veeam Backup and replication 9.5 update 4, it works fine with 6.7 U1 out of the box, no additional steps needed.

A workaround is also available:
Create the following registry value on the Veeam Backup and Replication server. You must be on Veeam 9.5 Update 3a

Please, note that value and data fields should not contain any spaces.

Location: HKLM\SOFTWARE\Veeam\Veeam Backup and Replication
Value: VMwareOverrideApiVersion
Type: Multi-String Value (REG_MULTI_SZ)
Data: 6.7.1=6.7

After creating the registry value above, you must reboot the Veeam Backup and Replication server.

More Information

More information regarding this workaround can be found here: https://forums.veeam.com/vmware-vsphere-f24/vsphere-6-7-u1-support-t54673.html

This is a temporary workaround against the specific error, which will allow the jobs to complete successfully. Overriding VMware API version may potentially cause issues with other Veeam functionality, because we don't know the specific API changes that made VMware increment the API version. We're working with VMware to obtain these details while continuing to test vSphere 6.7 U1 with the workaround applied.

All auto-tests of Update 3a with the workaround enabled have completed successfully, so all base Veeam Backup & Replication functionality is now confirmed to work with vSphere 6.7 U1. The forum post above will be updated once the full regression testing cycle completes.

  • Overview dashboard and Protected VMs report can display zero protected VMs when using Veeam Cloud Connect 9.5 Update 3a
  • After changing report scheduling settings, reports are sent out using the previous and the new time schedule
  • Backup policy change was not correctly updated in the Protected Computers report.

RESTful APIs

  • Under certain conditions vMsBackedUpToCloud counter does not include backup copies sent to a cloud repository

ConnectWise Manage Plugin

  • Under certain conditions ConnectWise Manage configurations cannot be created.
  • Under certain conditions not all products created in ConnectWise Manage are accessible for mapping when using the billing function.
  • Companies data cannot be collected from ConnectWise Manage due to the following error "An item with the same key has already been added"
  • Companies with multiple types cannot be collected from ConnectWise Manage

Jobs fail with "The host is not licensed for this feature" error message after upgrade to Veeam Backup & Replication Update 4

$
0
0

Challenge

After updating Veeam to 9.5 Update 4, backups of VMs begin to fail with the error: VDDK error: 16064 (The host is not licensed for this feature).

Cause

Due to a limitation in the VDDK library for VDDK 5.5.5, ESXi hosts on version 5.0 or 5.1 which are licensed with the VMware Essentials License do not have sufficient rights for common backup procedures in the VMware environment.

Solution

Veeam is currently in the process of developing a hotfix for this issue. As a workaround, if it is possible to apply an Evaluation License on the hosts, this will allow backups to resume until a hotfix is developed to resolve the issue.

Solution

As the result of an on-going R&D effort, and in response to customer feedback, Veeam Backup & Replication 9.5 Update 3a features a large number of enhancements, the most significant of which are listed below.

Platform support
  • VMware vSphere 6.7. Includes the new HTML5 version of vSphere Web Client plug-in for Veeam Backup & Replication, and asynchronous NBD/NBDSSL support for improved read performance of network transport mode with ESXi 6.7.
  • VMware vSphere 6.5 U2. This update introduces preliminary support by addressing all outstanding U2-specific compatibility issues that can be managed from the Veeam side.
  • VMware vCloud Director 9.1. Update 3a provides full compatibility for all existing vCloud Director integration functionality.
  • VMware Cloud on AWS version 1.3 support and preliminary out-of-the-box compatibility with future VMC updates through removal of the API version match requirement. Additionally, support for processing virtual machines with dynamic disks has been added.
  • Microsoft Windows 10 April 2018 Update. Includes support as guest virtual machines and for installation of Veeam Backup & Replication and all of its components.
  • Microsoft Windows Server 1803. Update 3a provides Windows Server 1803 support as guest virtual machines, for installation of Veeam Backup & Replication remote components, and as a domain controller for Veeam Explorer™ for Microsoft Active Directory.
  • Microsoft Windows Server Hyper-V 1803. Update 3a provides Hyper-V 1803 support as a hypervisor host, including support for processing VMs with virtual hardware version 8.3.
  • Microsoft System Center Virtual Machine Manager 1801. Update 3a adds SCVMM 1801 support as a source for Microsoft Hyper-V VMs backup jobs.
  • Novell OES 2018. Update 3a adds support for file-level recovery from the updated NSS file system included in OES 2018.
VMware vSphere
  • Performance of Direct Storage Access (DirectSAN) and Virtual Appliance (Hot Add) transport modes has been improved for backup infrastructure configurations through optimizing system memory interaction.
Microsoft Azure
  • Added support for Direct Restore to Microsoft Azure for environments with ExpressRoute or site-to-site VPN connectivity to Azure, in which case proxy and helper appliances may have private IP addresses only. To enable, create AzurePreferPrivateIpAddressesForProxyandLinuxAppliance (DWORD, 1) registry value under HKLM\SOFTWARE\Veeam\Veeam Backup and Replication key on the backup server.
Linux File Level Recovery
  • Added support for Linux SUID and SGID preservation to "Copy To" operation.
  • Added support for Btrfs volumes located on an LVM volume.
Primary Storage Integrations
  • Installing Universal Storage API plug-ins on each backup console (in addition to the backup server) is no longer required.
  • Storage snapshot-only vCloud Director backup jobs are now supported for all storage integrations which support storage snapshot-only jobs. Previously, it was supported for NetApp only.
  • Cisco HyperFlex integration will no longer delete the base sentinel snapshot during each job run to improve processing performance and reduce storage load.
Tape
  • Improved performance of enumeration in File to Tape jobs with very large number of files.
Veeam Cloud & Service Provider partners
Veeam Backup & Replication 9.5 Update 3a also includes enhancements and bug fixes for service providers offering Veeam Cloud Connect services, and managing backup servers with Veeam Availability Console. Update 3a also resolves the following common support issues:
  • User interface performance has been improved for large environments, including faster VM search and lower CPU consumption while browsing through job sessions history.
  • Restores through Direct NFS transport should no longer produce corrupted VMDKs on storage devices with advanced NFS server implementations.
  • VeeamZIP™ operations should no longer consume a license.
  • Backup copy job should no longer trigger health checks outside of the scheduled start time when GFS retention is in use, and will behave more reliably in a few corner cases.
  • Incremental backup runs should no longer keep setting ctkEnabled VM setting to "true", resulting in unwanted events logged by vCenter Server.
  • SATA X:7 disks should no longer be skipped with backup jobs by default.
  • Windows file level recovery (FLR) should now process large numbers of NTFS reparse points faster and more reliably.
  • Linux FLR should now correctly process directories with . and \ symbols in their names. In addition, encountering a named pipe object should no longer cause FLR to hang.
  • Direct Restore to Microsoft Azure should now process Linux machines with EFI boot more reliably.
  • Veeam Agent for Microsoft Windows’ jobs should no longer fail when the backup server uses custom certificate.
  • Veeam Explorer for Storage Snapshots now supports VMs located on LUNs larger than 16TB.
  • An HPE 3PAR integration should now handle large number of concurrent jobs more reliably, thanks to multiple improvements implemented based on support cases.
  • An HPE StoreOnce Catalyst SDK host process will now be restarted automatically when a Catalyst API call hangs, preventing Veeam jobs from hanging as a result.
  • IBM SVC integration should no longer fail at collecting iSCSI adapters.
