The issue appears if the Choose How Much Of Your Drive To Encrypt BitLocker setting was changed and saved (e.g. you changed Encrypt Used Disk Space Only to Encrypt Entire Drive or vice versa).

Solution

The following workarounds are available.

1. Disable BitLocker on the restore target drive:
  • In File Explorer, right-click the drive in question and then click Manage BitLocker.
  • On the BitLocker Drive Encryption page, click Turn Off BitLocker, and then click Turn off BitLocker again when prompted.
  • When decryption is finished, click Close.
or

2. Format the restore target drive.
  • Right-click the drive in File Explorer.
  • Choose Format.
  • Click Start.

Unable to exclude files from snapshot: Shadow Copy Optimization Writer timed out

$

0

Challenge

During a backup job Veeam Endpoint Backup returns the following warning:

Unable to exclude files from snapshot: Shadow Copy Optimization Writer timed out

The warning occurs in the following scenario: file-level backup is selected as backup mode, then a whole volume is selected, and a number of folders is explicitly excluded from backup.

Cause

The issue is caused by MS Copy Optimization Writer timeout due to a large number of excluded files. In such cases the Application Event Log on the affected workstation may contain entries similar to the one below:

Source:        VSS
Event ID:      8220
Level:         Information

Operation:
   OnPostSnapshot event
   PostSnapshot Event

Context:
Execution Context: Shadow Copy Optimization Writer
Writer Name: Shadow Copy Optimization Writer

Solution

Two possible approaches are suggested.

Either
1. Reduce the number of excluded folders until the warning is no longer displayed.
Or
2. Rather than selecting a whole volume within file-level backup, it is recommended to select only the specific folders, that need to be processed.

More Information

If you have further questions, open a support case as follows:

  1. Right-click the Veeam Endpoint Backup / Veeam Agent for Windows icon in the system tray and select Control Panel.
  2. Click the Support link at the top of the window.

Unable to exclude files from snapshot: Shadow Copy Optimization Writer is not available

$
0
0

Challenge

During a backup job Veeam Endpoint Backup or Veeam Agent for Windows returns the following warning:

Unable to exclude files from snapshot: Shadow Copy Optimization Writer is not available

Cause

The issue is caused by the Microsoft Shadow Copy Optimization Writer failure, which Veeam Endpoint Backup displays.

This issue with MS Copy Optimization Writer availability is sporadic. So far we were not able to narrow it down to a specific configuration. It may or may not affect backups within the same chain without any apparent changes predating the symptoms.

In such cases the Application Event Log on the workstation in question may contain entries similar to the one below:

Source: VSS
Event ID: 8193
Level: Error

General: Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Unexpected error calling routine ConvertStringSidToSid, The security ID structure is invalid.

Operation:
 OnIdentify event
 Gathering Writer Data

Context:
Execution Context: Shadow Copy Optimization Writer
Writer Name: Shadow Copy Optimization Writer

Solution

The available workaround is described in the following Technet post. Keep in mind, that there is no guarantee, that this workaround will help in your specific scenario.

Since the root case is on the Microsoft side, it is best to involve Microsoft Support if you need a permanent solution. We can assist you with the collection of diagnostic information for Microsoft and participate in the communication with them. CVS volumes are put into "Redirected access" mode when a recovery media is created on the CSV owner Hyper-V host in Microsoft Failover Cluster

$
0
0

Challenge

If Recovery Media is created on a CSV owner Hyper-V host, all CSV's that it owns will be put into "Redirected access" mode. The System event log will show the following event:

Event ID = 5125, Failover Clustering:

Cluster Shared Volume 'VolumeX' ('VolumeX') has identified one or more active filter drivers on this device stack that could interfere with CSV operations. I/O access will be redirected to the storage device over the network through another Cluster node. This may result in degraded performance. Please contact the filter driver vendor to verify interoperability with Cluster Shared Volumes.

Active filter drivers found:
WIMMount (HSM)

Cause

The Cluster Shared Volume detects that the WIMMount driver has become active on the device stack, and the CVS is put into "Redirected access" mode while WIMMount is active. While "Redirected access" mode is enabled, the CSV performance may degrade.

Solution

The following workarounds are available.
  1. Reboot the Hyper-V host after the Recovery Media creation to disable the WIMMount driver.
  2. Stop WIMMount manually.
WARNING: stopping WIMMount manually may lead to unexpected results.

If you wish to stop the WIMMount driver manually, run the Command Prompt as Administrator and execute the following command:

sc stop wimmount

You should see a similar output.

SERVICE_NAME: wimmount
        TYPE : 2 FILE_SYSTEM_DRIVER
        STATE : 1 STOPPED

How to merge product licenses

$
0
0

Challenge

In some cases you may need to merge several Veeam licenses for the same product into one license to get extended sockets capacity. A solution provided below explains how to achieve this goal using an online tool available for every Veeam customer.

Please note that the combined license key will have the earliest support expiration date of all product keys.

Solution

In order to merge licenses follow instructions below:

NOTE! Before merging, you must ensure all your licenses have the same product name and edition, version, and license administrator.
  1. Log on to the License Management Portal with your Veeam.com user account following this link:
    http://www.veeam.com/manage_licenses.html

  2. The "Action" column will show an additional option to merge licenses whenever additional licenses of the same product have been added.
Merging will allow you to manage your infrastructure as one via a single key with the combined socket totals, rather than segmenting different socket purchases.

    User-added image

  3. Click "Merge" link of any of licenses you are going to merge.

  4. On the next screen, select licenses you need to merge using check boxes at the left side, then use "Download File" or "Send via Email" buttons to receive the merged license file:

NOTE: The combined license key will have the earliest support expiration date of all product keys. If you are still unable to merge the licenses, please open a Licensing case at Veeam Customer Portal or contact your local Veeam representative.

Warning: Partition exceeds disk layout

$
0
0

Challenge

The following warning is thrown during backup job execution:

Partition <number> exceeds disk <number> layout by <number> bytes

Cause

Veeam Endpoint Backup and Veeam Backup for Windows can determine a volume being allocated incorrectly on the disk. As a result you may get the warning above in the backup log. You may ignore it, but it is recommended that you follow the solution provided below.

Solution

To correct the allocation issue you can run a Windows built-in shrink operation for the volume that exceeds the disks layout.
  1. Open Windows Disk Management from Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management > Disk Management.
  2. Identify the volume to shrink. Warning message contains the sequential partition number which can be associated with the volume allocated on the disk. In most cases such partition is the last volume in the disk layout.
  3. Calculate the amount of space to shrink. Warning message displays the size in bytes and shrink operation is calculated in Megabytes, so you have to convert bytes to Megabytes and round the result. Divide the value indicated in the warning by 1048576 and round it to get an integer.
  4. Right-click the affected volume and choose Shrink Volume. Specify the value you calculated earlier and click Shrink.
  5. When the shrinking operation completes, re-run the backup job to verify the result.
For example: Warning says Partition 2 exceeds disk 0 layout by 1024000 bytes

According to the Disk Management, Partition 2 is volume C:

User-added image

Dividing 1024000 by 1048576 and rounding to the integer would give the result of 1 MB.

Possible issues with cloud storages

$
0
0

Challenge

When a restore is performed on a PC which is connected to a cloud storage, issues are possible after synchronization with the cloud. Some files or folders may be reverted to an outdated state, moved to Junk or missing.

Cause

Due to One Drive logic, issues with One Drive are possible in any configurations.

Issues with Google Drive and Dropbox are possible if during backup, Google Drive and Dropbox folders were excluded.

Solution

Firstly, we do not recommend to exclude Google Drive and Dropbox folders during backup.

Secondly, the following manual workaround should ensure the consistency of your data.

1.
Before you start a restore, download the data from your cloud drive to a local storage not involved in restore.
2. Disable Internet connection on the PC on the hardware level (unplug network cable, turn off Wi-Fi switch, turn off Wi-Fi router, unplug modem, unplug SIM from built-in modem, etc).
3. Perform restore as intended.
4. Manually replace the files in
One Drive, Google Drive and Dropbox folders with the files you downloaded at step 1.
5. Enable Internet connection.

More Information

Interaction with other cloud drives has not been tested, so it is strongly recommended to use the workaround mentioned above to ensure the data consistency.

Challenge

A dump of backup storage is requested by Veeam Support for troubleshooting.

Cause

You can use VeeamAgent.exe to generate the required data.

Solution

Begin with locating the VeeamAgent files, check the following defalt paths.

For Veeam Endpoint Backup and Veeam Agent for Windows:
C:\Program Files\Veeam\EndPoint Backup\x64\VeeamAgent.exe
or
C:\Program Files\Veeam\EndPoint Backup\x86\VeeamAgent.exe

For Veeam Agent for Linux
/usr/sbin/veeamagent

The following instructions are identical for all products mentioned above.

1. Run the command line and start VeeamAgent by specifying the full path.
2. Type dumpStg and press Enter.
3. Provide the full path to the requested backup file and press Enter.
4. Provide the full path to the target text file which will be used for a storage dump and press Enter. There is no need to create a text file manually, since VeeamAgent will create one.

More Information

Example for Veeam Endpoint Backup and Veeam Agent for Windows.

Your agent is located at C:\Program Files\Veeam\EndPoint Backup\x64(or x86)\VeeamAgent.exe

Challenge

Adding a Hyper-V server to Backup Infrastructure fails with the following error message:

User-added image

Cause

This can be the result of a version mismatch between the .DLL and service on the Host. Check the versions of the files as shown below:

User-added image

This will also manifest as the Veeam Installer Service refusing to start from services.msc. Note as below that the Veeam Data Mover Service starts, but the Installer Service is not running and cannot be started:

User-added image

Solution

The goal is to manually resolve the version of, and cleanly remove, the deployed components. To do so:
  1. Verify all of the above to identify this issue positively. If the version mismatch does not exist, you may wish to contact Support.
  2. On the Veeam server itself, navigate to “C:\Program Files\Veeam\Backup and Replicaton\Backup\Packages” (if default installation path is used).
  3. Copy VeeamDeploymentDll.dll and VeeamDeploymentSvc.exe to the target host in the path “C:\Windows\Veeam\Backup”. (You may need to grant permission to perform this copy.)
  4. From an Administrator command prompt, run: sc delete veeamdeploysvc
  5. Double-click on the service executable on the host, and choose “Repair” as you proceed through the wizard.

For details on the sc delete command, see https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc742045(v=ws.11).aspx

You should be able to add the host now through the Veeam console at this point.

Removing a License from Veeam Backup and Replication or Enterprise Manager

$
0
0

Challenge

You need to remove an existing Veeam Backup and Replication (VBR), Veeam Agent for Windows (VAW) or Veeam Agent for Linux (VAL) license from Veeam Backup and Replication (VBR) or Enterprise Manager (EM).

Cause

A license has to be removed from VBR/EM.

Solution

If you have VBR Enterprise Manager, you must use it to remove the licenses in question.

1. Open the command line.

2. Navigate to the EM installation folder (default path in the example below):
cd C:\Program Files\Veeam\Backup and Replication\Enterprise Manager

3. Remove the license by running
Veeam.Backup.EnterpriseService.exe -removelicense [vaw, val]

After running this command, restart Veeam Backup Enterprise Manager service so that the license information is updated in the UI.

In case you only have Veeam Backup and Replication without EM, here is how you can remove the license:

1. Open the command line.

2. Navigate to the VBR installation folder (default path in the example below):
cd C:\Program Files\Veeam\Backup and Replication\Backup

3. Remove the license by running
Veeam.Backup.Manager.exe -removelicense [all, vbr, vaw, val]

Alternatively, the same result can be achieved with the use of Windows PowerShell. Run Windows PowerShell as administrator and use the following commands to remove the license.

If you have VBR Enterprise Manager, you must use it to remove the licenses in question.
.\Veeam.Backup.EnterpriseService.exe -removelicense [vaw, val]

After running this command, restart Veeam Backup Enterprise Manager service so that the license information is updated in the UI.

In case you only have Veeam Backup and Replication without EM, here is how you can remove the license:
.\Veeam.Backup.Manager.exe -removelicense [all, vbr, vaw, val]

More Information

Note: specify the desired parameter without brackets:
Veeam.Backup.EnterpriseService.exe -removelicense vaw
Veeam.Backup.Manager.exe -removelicense vaw
.\Veeam.Backup.EnterpriseService.exe -removelicense vaw
.\Veeam.Backup.Manager.exe -removelicense vaw
If no parameter is specified, all existing licenses will be removed.

Using alert description, time generated and other data in a scripted action

$
0
0

Challenge

The article gives an example of how alarm data can be used in scripting actions.

Cause

You would like to use alarm data in custom scripts.

Solution

Run script — select this option if you want to run a custom script when the alarm is triggered or when the alarm status changes. By running a post-alarm script, you can automate routine tasks that are normally performed when specific alarms fire. For example, if a critical system is affected, you may need to immediately open a ticket with the in-house support or perform some corrective actions that will eliminate the problem.

In the Value field, enter the path to the executable file (please note that the executable file must be located on the Veeam ONE server). You can use the following parameters in the command line for running the script: %1 — alarm name; %2 — fired node name; %3 — triggering summary; %4 — time; %5 — alarm status; %6 — old alarm status.

User-added image

Example:

REM A script to log alarms in a text file C:\temp\alarm.txt
SET v1=%1
SET v2=%2
SET v3=%3
SET v4=%4
SET v5=%5
SET v6=%6

echo %v1%>>C:\temp\alarm.txt
echo %v2%>>C:\temp\alarm.txt
echo %v3%>>C:\temp\alarm.txt
echo %v4%>>C:\temp\alarm.txt
echo %v5%>>C:\temp\alarm.txt
echo %v6%>>C:\temp\alarm.txt

echo ================================>>C:\temp\alarm.txt

ConfigStoreRootPath cluster parameter is not defined

$
0
0

Challenge

This article describes how to fix the warning/error “ConfigStoreRootPath cluster parameter is not defined” appearing in the following situations:
  • When you add a Windows Server 2016 Hyper-V cluster to Veeam console.
  • When you take a backup of a VM with a shared virtual disk located on the Windows Server 2016 Hyper-V cluster

Cause

In Hyper-V 2016 Microsoft implemented a possibility to share a virtual hard disk (in .vhdx or .vhds format only) between two or more VMs and use that virtual hard disk as a shared storage when building guest clusters.

When you decide to add a Windows Server 2016 Hyper-V cluster to Veeam console, you must decide where to store meta files created during the backup process of the VMs from the shared virtual hard disk (i.e. information about snapshot groups etc.).

By default, meta files location is not defined, so you need to define it manually.

Solution

1. To check the existing configuration run the following PS command on any node of the cluster:

Get-ClusterResource "Virtual Machine Cluster WMI" | Get-ClusterParameter ConfigStoreRootPath

By default, “value” points to a cluster volume (e.g. C:\ClusterStorage\Volume1).

2. Create a folder on that volume, and this folder will act as the meta files location. The folder should be available to all members of the cluster. (e.g. C:\Clusterstorage\Volume1\Hyper-V\Shared)

3. Specify the path to the newly created folder with the following commands:

$path = "C:\ClusterStorage\Volume1\Hyper-V\Shared"
Get-ClusterResource "Virtual Machine Cluster WMI" | Set-ClusterParameter -Name ConfigStoreRootPath -Value $path

The cluster now can be added to Veeam. If the cluster had already been added and the backup failed with the error in question, re-run the backup after setting the value.

Challenge

When accessing backup files on a CIFS (SMB) repository, Veeam Backup and Replication reports either of the following errors:

The specified network name is no longer available. (code 59, 0x8007003B)

An unexpected network error occurred. (code 64, 0x80070040)

Veeam Backup & Replication uses SMB connections for backup repositories, guest processing, and when first adding a Windows server to the Backup Infrastructure. This KB only addresses error messages that occur in the context of a backup file path, such as:

The specified network name is no longer available. Failed to read data from the file [\\10.0.0.81\backups\SQL VM New\SQL VM New2015-09-23T200441.vbk].

Note: If the failure is occurring in a tape job and no UNC path is specified in the error message, please contact Veeam Support.

Cause

These error messages are passed directly from Microsoft Windows, and indicate that some unknown problem led to a sudden failure of the connection between the repository gateway (acting as Server Message Block client) and the SMB server (typically a NAS appliance).

User-added image

There are many possible reasons the SMB connection might fail:

  • Network issues are a common reason, constituting a potentially unlimited variety of hardware failure or network hardware configuration problems; such issues may or may not involve packet loss.
  • Simple firewalls may block a connection consistently, while advanced firewalls might destroy an existing connection seemingly at random or under very specific conditions.
  • Either client or server might close the connection due to one of a number of timeouts or retry limits either at the SMB protocol layer or the underlying TCP layer; such limits are often encountered due to network congestion or excessive load on the storage.
  • The NAS may stop responding entirely due to hardware or software issues; it may in some cases be misconfigured. Appliances using post-process deduplication may stop responding if the process starts prematurely.

Solution

Common Workarounds
  • If the repository share is located on a Windows server, try creating a Windows repository on that server instead of a CIFS (SMB) repository.
  • Reboot both the SMB client machine (repository gateway) and the SMB server (NAS).
  • If other storage is available, try writing the backup to the other storage as both verification of the problem and as a temporary workaround.
  • Consider reconfiguring the NAS as iSCSI or an NFS mount on a separate Linux repository server, depending on what is supported by the NAS. This change may involve data loss. iSCSI usually offers the best performance.
  • Writing backup files to SMB shares over a slow or unreliable network, such as a WAN connection, is not recommended. Deploy a gateway server with a fast connection to the share.
  • To rule out interference from a firewall, temporarily disable any software firewalls (including certain antivirus products) on the SMB client or server, as well as any hardware firewalls between them.
Registry Settings

These registry values must be created on the the SMB client, which is specified in the repository settings as “Gateway server”. If the gateway is set to “automatic”, add these registry values to all Windows servers managed by Veeam Backup & Replication.

NetUseShareAccess:
For Veeam B&R 8.0.0.917 or later, the following registry value allows Data Movers to open backup files by a resilient method similar to the Windows net use command.

Key: HKLM\SOFTWARE\Veeam\Veeam Backup and Replication\
DWORD: NetUseShareAccess
Value: 1

Note: If credentials are required, specify Domain\User or Host\User in the repository settings. .\User credentials are not supported with NetUseShareAccess. For example, specify “NAS-01\Admin” instead of “.\Admin”.

SessTimeout - Reboot Required

Key: HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanWorkstation\Parameters\
DWORD: SessTimeout
This is a value in seconds. Try a value of 600 decimal (10 minutes).
This increases the amount of time the Windows SMB client will wait for a response from an SMB server before it aborts the connection. The default timeout is one minute.

TcpMaxDataRetransmissions - Reboot Required

Key: HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters
DWORD: TcpMaxDataRetransmissions
Try a value of 10.
This increases the number of times the Windows TCP implementation will retransmit a data segment before it aborts the connection. The default number of retries is five.

Additional Troubleshooting
  • Open the repository settings and enable Limit combined data rate. If you can measure the existing data rate, start with a limit between 50% and 70% of that value to verify that reducing throughput prevents the error. If the network is still congested after limiting the repository data rate, and the source of the congestion is due to other Veeam processes, enable throttling for the relevant connections.
  • Change the gateway server in the repository settings to test whether particular routes to the share perform better than others. For example, if connections from any Windows server on an ESXi host tend to fail, but connections from a physical Windows machine do not fail, the root cause probably involves that ESXi host or its network connection.
  • If the SMB connection consistently fails after 10 hours, it may be due to expiration of a Kerberos service ticket. The most reliable workaround is to create non-domain credentials on the NAS, then specify those credentials in the repository settings. For more information and other possible workarounds, see this SAMBA mailing list discussion and the Authentication Expiration Timer heading in this MSDN blog post.
