Hyper-V Guest processing skipped (check guest OS VSS state and integration components version)

$

Challenge

Guest VMs will fail to engage VSS when application-aware image processing is enabled generating an error:

Error    Guest processing skipped (check guest OS VSS state and integration components version) (System.Exception)

Cause

This issue has multiple potential causes, usually related to the Integration Services version of the failing guest server. This issue occurs when Application-Aware image processing is utilized in the Backup or Replication job settings for transactional quiescence using Microsoft VSS

Solution

Integration Services

Make sure integration services are up to date. The Hyper-V Integration Services log in the event viewer of the Hyper-V host that maintains the failing VM.  Look for the name of the failing server with any error events referencing the integration components being out of date. The following is an example of the event text.
Hyper-V Volume Shadow Copy Requestor connected to virtual machine ‘VM-Name’, but the version does not match the version expected by Hyper-V (Virtual machine ID). Framework version: Negotiated (3.0) - Expected (3.0); Message version: Negotiated (3.0) - Expected (4.0). This is an unsupported configuration. This means that technical support will not be provided until this problem is resolved. To fix this problem, upgrade the integration services. To upgrade, connect to the virtual machine and select Insert Integration Services Setup Disk from the Action menu.

If any Integration Service components are listed as out of date, update them on the guest server by following the Steps listed below. Please note this process applies to Windows Server 2008 R2, Server 2012 and Server 2012 R2
•  Server 2012 http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh846766.aspx#BKMK_step4
•  Server 2008 R2 http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee207413(v=WS.10).aspx

To determine the Integration services version on the guest:
•  2008R2: On the Hyper-V host server, browse to C:\windows\system32\vmms.exe > open the proprieties of the file and go to the ‘details’ tab.
•  2012 & 2012 R2: Run one of these two powershell commands on the host containing the VMs as Administrator:
  • Get-VM | ft Name, IntegrationServicesVersion
  • Get-VM | select VMName, IntegrationServicesState

Click here for a list of Hyper-V Integration Services and their corresponding build numbers.

Guest OS

The following steps and checks are to be performed within the Guest OS of the VM that is failing to backup.

for the list of supported guest OSes. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc794868(v=ws.10).aspxServer 2012 R2 guests are not supported for VSS-enabled (AAIP) backups on 2008 R2 hosts due to integration components incompatibility. Please see NOTE:
•  Make sure Windows is running the most recent service pack.
•  Make sure Windows is running the most recent service pack.

•  Open Disk Management (diskmgmt.msc), check for the following:

1. View the properties of a volume, then go to the Shadow Copies tab.
2.
Check the settings for each Volume in the Shadow Copies section to make sure the Volume and the Storage area match.
User-added image
No Dynamic disks.(The VHD(X) itself can be dynamic, the volume within the Guest OS cannot.)Dynamic disks cannot utilize VSS and be backed up live.

3.  No FAT or FAT32 Volumes. All volumes must be NTFS or ReFS. The System Reserved partition must have more than 42MB of space free. If less than 42MB is free, try creating a shadow copy for the volume.

User-added image

   •  Open Services (services.msc) and start “Hyper-V Volume Shadow Copy Requestor” service. If it is ‘Running’, restart it.
 •   If the VM Guest OS is 2012 and the Host is 2008R2:

View the Guest OS Application Event logs for errors with source:

vmicvss

Event ID: 13.

If this error is present, open the Registry Editor (regedit) and navigate to:

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\SystemRestore\

DWORD: Within that key create a new

ScopeSnapshotsName:

0Value:
Note: If the SystemRestore key is not present, you will have to create it.
  •  If all other troubleshooting fails, restart the virtual machine. Once the VM has powered on and all services are started, restart the “Hyper-V Volume Shadow Copy Requestor” service.

VM Configuration
The following steps and checks are to be performed from the Hyper-V host level.

                   •    Make sure the VM has a SCSI controller. One must be present, even if there are no devices to use the SCSI controller.

The error will present itself in the Hyper-V VMMS > Admin Event log. Example:
“The virtual machine ' Vm-Name' cannot be hot backed up since it has no SCSI controllers attached. Please add one or more SCSI controllers to the virtual machine before performing a backup. (Virtual   machine ID).”
        •   Within the Virtual Machine settings verify that the “Backup (Volume Snapshot)” option is enabled.

User-added image
  • Make sure that the virtual machine files (VHD files) are not sitting in the root folder of the CSV, as this may prevent correct snapshot creation due to permission restrictions. We strongly recommend to keep virtual machine files in separate folder.

    Verification

Use these steps to verify whether your troubleshooting has worked without having to run a Veeam backup or replication job. If the Hyper-V writer caption for the VM displays the wrong state, you can contact Veeam Support to verify your troubleshooting based on this article, or contact Microsoft support for additional troubleshooting steps.

Perform the following steps on the Hyper-V host that the VM is running on.

    Open an Administrator Command Prompt1.
    2.  Run the command:
    Diskshadow /L C:\writers.txt
    3.  Run the command:
    list writers

When this completes you can then open writers.txt and locate the VM name in the section for the Hyper-V writer. For each VM there's a "Caption" entry that should read "online" or "child partition", and not "offline" or "saved state".

DD replication causes panic error on the target Data Domain server

$
0
0

Challenge

You have configured a Data Domain Storage Unit as a Veeam backup repository using MTree replication. Data Domain replication results in PANIC on the target Data Domain storage.

Cause

Veeam Backup & Replication leverages the Virtual Synthetic (VS) feature of the DD Boost library for building Grandfather-Father-Son (GFS) restore points or when applying retention policies to backup chains. As part of the Veeam workflow, overwrites can occur over sections of the file being replicated that have already been processed. This behavior will trigger the recipe tracking process to remove all recipes on the disk, but not any invalid in-memory recipes. This may result in a corrupted recipe to be recalled and lead to an incorrect recipe replication process later (because of a checksum mismatch) so that recipe replication will be confused and target EMC Data Domain may PANIC.

Solution

Turning off the recipe processing feature on the source Data Domain system source for MTree replication will resolve the issue. A later DDOS 6.x release will fix the underlying issue, and recipe processing can then be re-enabled for performance reasons.

Customers should first verify their system matches the criteria for overcoming the issue:

1. Confirm that the system configured for VEEAM backups is also configured for Data Domain MTree replication:
# replication show config
In the output look for "mtree://"

2. Confirm if managed file replication (MFR) or backup replication via DD Boost) is being used, on the Data Domain you can use this command:
# ddboost file-replication show active all
Also verify in the backup application configurations.

Once confirmed through the commands above your system may be a configuration where this issue applies, please contact Veeam Support to assist you further.

Note the workaround to be performed by a Dell EMC TSE will require disabling Data Domain replication and MFR replication jobs, and will require downtime for the workaround to be completed.

More Information

This fix was made into DDOS 6.0.1.

Hyper-V Changed Block Tracking Troubleshooting

$

Challenge

Veeam Backup and/or replication jobs report that changed block tracking is not working properly.

Solution

Ensure Veeam Backup & Replication is running on the latest build.  Latest patches will be visible on the download page for Backup & Replication (https://www.veeam.com/vmware-esx-backup/download.html). You will need to login to the Veeam Customer Portal to obtain any patch.

For a warning message stating “failed to flush changed block tracking” when backing up VMs on a Hyper-V cluster:
  • Ensure none of the cluster nodes are in maintenance mode, have the cluster service stopped, are powered off, or otherwise not accessible.
  • Ensure all nodes within the cluster can communicate with each other.  This can be tested by pinging between the nodes and using wbemtest (see http://www.veeam.com/kb1926) to connect between nodes via WMI.  For wbemtest, the two namespaces you want to ensure can be connected to are root\cimv2 and root\virtualization (root\virtualization\v2 for Windows Server 2012+).
  • Make sure the hosts are not added to the Veeam console as standalone hosts if they belong to a cluster.  This prevents changed block tracking data from being replicated to all nodes.  The cluster must be added to the Veeam console.

If the VMs reside on SMBv3 storage:
  • Ensure the SMB server is added to the Backup & Replication console.

User-added image

  • Ensure the shares are visible in the Backup & Replication console.

User-added image

User-added image

  • If Hyper-V checkpoints/snapshots are manually created/deleted (merged) on VMs, you will get a message that changed block tracking is not working.  This is because checkpoint/snapshot operations create an additional file (avhd/avhdx) that has to be tracked.  It is added to the list of files to track (or removed in case of deletion/merge of a snapshot/checkpoint) and the changed block tracking warning should resolve the second job run after the snapshot/checkpoint was created/deleted (merged).

Changed block tracking can be reset for a Hyper-V cluster by performing the following steps, should the information above not resolve the issue.  To reset changed block tracking, please perform the following:
  • Select the option to disable changed block tracking on all Hyper-V hosts in the cluster.  To do this, right-click on each host in the cluster, select Manage Volumes and then check the box to disable changed block tracking.

User-added image

User-added image

  • Run sc stop VeeamFCT, in an elevated command prompt, on each Hyper-V host in the cluster to ensure the CBT service is stopped.
  • Find, export and then delete the following registry key on all Hyper-V hosts in the cluster:  HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\VeeamFCT\Parameters\CTDB
  • Go back to the Manage Volumes for each host and uncheck the disable changed block tracking option.  Try the job after this.  Allow a couple of job runs before ensuring CBT is working.
  • If the issue persists, reboot each Hyper-V host in the cluster.  This will typically involve migrating VMs from one host to another and rebooting the host once it does not own any VMs.  Repeat these steps for all Hyper-V hosts in the cluster.

vCenter Migration Utility

$

0

Challenge

If a Virtual Machines MoRef is changed due to migration to new vCenter / inventory change in vCenter, you would receive the error "Object "vmname" is not found".  Please see KB1299 for more details.

This utility is designed to assist in re-mapping the MoRef ID's of the Virtual Machines you are backing up and/or replicating using Veeam Backup & Replication, so that backup incremental chains remain intact, after an inventory change in VMware vSphere vCenter. Do not run any jobs before using migration tool otherwise migration process won't be possible.

Please note that this utility is provided as a courtesy, and is not officially supported by Veeam Technical Support.  Use at your own risk.

VMware vSphere 6.5 and Veeam 9.5 aren't supported yet.

Cause

Veeam Backup & Replication tracks Virtual Machines in its jobs by a Managed Object Reference ID (MoRef), which will change when moved to another vCenter, or removed and re-added to inventory.

Solution

Please download this bundle: tool and instructions.  Before using this tool, it is highly recommend to take a configuration backup of your VeeamBackup database
Please note that the utility will work only with a source vCenter migration. If Replication target vCenter is changed, you will need to manually map source VMs to their replicas

Job fails with an error "The request is not supported. Failed to duplicate extent"

Challenge

After reformatting the Resilient File System (ReFS) volume at 64k cluster size Veeam fails to build Synthetic Full or Grandfather-Father-Son (GFS) restore points while incremental restore points created just fine:

Synthetic full backup creation failed Error: Agent: Failed to process method {Transform.CompileFIB}: The request is not supported. Failed to duplicate extent. Target file: <Backup repository name>\<Backup job>.vbk, Source file:<Backup repository name>\<Backup job>.vib, TgtOffset: 4091998, SrcOffset: 41019571928, DataSize: 42

Cause

Veeam B&R does not detect updated cluster size automatically.

Solution

Please go to the Backup Repository tab, right-click on the repository -> Properties and  go through the wizard to the end. Once it's done the cluster size will be updated in Veeam B&R database.

No Azure storage accounts can be found

$
0
0

Challenge

When attempting a direct restore to Azure through the B&R console, or when using PowerShell scripting for the same purpose (Get-VBRAzureStorageAccount), no storage accounts can be found, or the specified storage account is not returned.

Cause

The storage account(s) specified are blob storage accounts, which are not usable for VM restores.

Solution

Specify or select a valid general purpose storage account. If none exist, one must be created within your Microsoft Azure subscription before you can perform restores to Azure.

More Information

Microsoft Azure storage accounts come in two varieties. The first is “General purpose”, while the second is “Blob storage”. From the tooltip in Azure:
  • General purpose storage accounts provide storage for blobs, files, tables, and queues in a unified account.
  • Blob storage accounts are specialized for storing blob data and support choosing an access tier, which allows you to specify how frequently data in the account is accessed.
Blob storage is specifically for “unstructured data”, which ultimately means it’s a sort of file share, and much more massively scalable. This storage type, however, is not optimized for virtual machine disks and, contrasted with a general purpose storage account, cannot have SSD storage (“Premium performance”) selected.

Per the user guide, blob storage accounts will not be displayed in the list of subscriptions.

General purpose storage accounts, also referred to as “Disk storage”, are premium storage for high-I/O needs, which means these are more optimized for virtual machine disks. These should be created if your goal is to work with VMs in Azure.

Challenge

When attempting to perform a Windows FLR (Guest Files ‘Windows’) the restore fails with:

User-added image

No disks have been mounted. Either disks of this type aren’t supported or some errors occurred. See log file for details.

Solution

Confirm that the VM that the files are being restored from was using one the following filesystems.
  • FAT
  • FAT32
  • NTFS
  • ReFS*
 ──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
Troubleshooting Steps
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────

1.  Clear all temporary files from “C:\Users\<serviceaccount>\AppData\Local\Temp\”

Note: When the Veeam Backup Service account is ‘local system’, the temporary directory used is C:\Windows\Temp.

2.  Open an Administrator Command Prompt and run the following commands:
(The installation path for Veeam if it was upgraded from 6.5 is: C:\Program Files\Veeam\Backup and Replication\)
(With Veeam v9 the operation must be performed on a Mount Server under the path: C:\Program Files\Common Files\Veeam\Backup and Replication\Mount Service)
cd “C:\Program Files\Veeam\Backup and Replication\Backup”
vdk remove
vdk install

3.  Confirm that the account being used for the Veeam Backup Service has the "Perform volume maintenance tasks" right assigned to it. This can be located within the group policy (gpedit.msc) under:
Computer Configuration>Windows Settings>Security Settings>Local Policies>User Rights Assignment
4.  Reboot the Veeam server

More Information

To restore files from a VM running Microsoft Windows ReFS 3.x, the console and mount server must be installed on machines running Microsoft Windows Server 2016.

To support restore of files from a VM running Microsoft Windows ReFS 2.0 or earlier the console and mount server must be installed on machines running Server 2012/Server 2012 R2.

If the server you are attempting to restore from has volumes with native 2012 data deduplication, Veeam must be installed on the same operating system and also have the “Data Deduplication” role enabled. The “Data Deduplication” role appears under "File and ISCSi Services" in server manager.

If the Windows FLR continues to fail after attempting the steps outlined in this KB, please attempt and Other-OS FLR. For more information regarding how to do that please review the following:

Veeam ONE database calculator

$
0
0

Challenge

The calculator will assist you in planning the deployment taking into account all major factors that impact the database size.

Cause

Veeam ONE database sizing calculator will help you calculate the expected size of databases to store historical data for one year and estimate the following deployment requirements:
  • Disk space required to store VMware vSphere historical data
  • Disk space required to store Microsoft Hyper-V  historical data
  • Disk space required to store Veeam Backup & Replication historical data"
Calculation results are based on the following parameters you need to provide:
  • Virtual infrastructure inventory (number and configuration of objects in your virtual infrastructure)
  • Veeam Backup & Replciation infrastructure inventory (number of jobs, VMs in the backup job and job schedule)"

Solution

Download the calculator here.

To estimate disk space required for the database:
  1. Investigate your virtual and backup infrastructures to find out the number of hosts, clusters, virtual machines, datastores to monitor as well as their configuration parameters.
  2. On the Calculator worksheet in the Parameters column,  enter information about your infrastructure inventory, job schedule and number of protected VMs. Note that the green text color in cells indicates user-input values; the grey text color indicates that the values should not be changed.
The calculated results are available in the Results column on the Calculator worksheet.

More Information

1. The calculator provides approximate estimations. There might be some insignificant gaps between calculated results and real values.

2. In some situations you may deal with an infrastructure of a mixed type, for example if you are planning to utilize hosts with 4 HBAs and 8 HBAs. To calculate the expected size of the databases, it is recommended to run calculation twice – once for each of the host types.

3. This calculator estimates the database size for Veeam ONE 9.5, including vSphere, Hyper-V and Veeam Backup & Replication infrasructures.

Win32 error: The network path was not found. Code 53

$

0

Challenge

You receive the following error within moments of a job starting:

Cannot connect to the host's administrative share. Host:  [VM hostname or IP]. Account: [domain\user].
Win32 error: The network path was not found. Code: 53

NOTE: This applies to both VMware and Hyper-V hypervisors.

Cause

This error means that the Veeam Backup & Replication server cannot connect to the Windows guest’s OS feature to deploy guest processing components. This path will be the ADMIN$ share (\\hostname\admin$) of the guest itself.

These components are deployed directly from the Veeam Backup & Replication server. If networking is inherently impossible to the guest from the B&R server (different networks, firewall, etc), processing protocol may require inversion (VMware only).

Solution

When this error occurs, there are a few items to go through:

  • Make sure the Windows time on the Veeam Backup server is the same as in the guest OS.
  • Make sure you do not have a firewall in the way (you can try disabling it for testing).
  • Make sure you can connect to the admin share (for example, \\Server Name\admin$) with the same credentials as provided to Veeam Backup & Replication for VSS.
  • Make sure the VSS writers are set to automatic in the guest OS.
  • Make sure you provide Local Administrator (MACHINE\Administrator) or Domain Administrator (DOMAIN\Administrator) account privileges.
  • Make sure the guest OS is in the same network as the Veeam Backup server.
  • Make sure File and Printer Sharing is enabled in the guest OS.
  • If the guest OS is Vista/2008 or later:
    • In the Network and Sharing Center, verify that it is not set for a public domain.
    • Verify that the Remote Registry Service is started.

More Information

To Inverse the processing protocol used (native Windows remote administration versus VMware VIX), utilize the below.
For Veeam 9.x and later the value should be created on the Guest Interaction Proxy.

o    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Veeam\Veeam Backup and Replication\
o    DWORD: InverseVssProtocolOrder
o    Value = 1
o    To disable (default behavior), value is 0 (false)

Case administrators management: Guide for users

$
0
0

Challenge

Starting in Mar. 2017, only case administrators and license administrators will be able to submit support cases. Please make sure to define valid case administrators for your Veeam licenses.

Customers are now able to list people who can manage support tickets on behalf of their company – case administrators. By adding a case administrator, you invite an employee of your company, a reseller or a third-party contractor to join you in managing your cases with the Veeam® Support Team. Please note that case administrators can open cases, but they cannot manage your existing licenses.

Please also note Veeam Support is not able to change the case administrator for an account. This action can only be performed by license administrators (primary or secondary) for a given account.

If you are a primary or a secondary license administrator, you already have access to case administrators management on My Account. Here you can manage case administrators for all your licenses (Support IDs).

If you have lost access to the license administrator account or would like it to be changed, please create a licensing case.

User-added image

Solution

How do you assign case administrators to a license?

Click Create case administrator to invite someone to manage your support cases. A case administrator can be an employee of your company, a reseller or a third-party contractor. On the next page you will need to provide their e-mail address.

If the person to whom you would like to give case administrator rights does not have a profile on veeam.com, you may be asked to specify their name and company. If your case administrator's company is not yet registered on veeam.com some additional info may be requested.

User-added image
User-added image

Once all the necessary details are provided you will need to select Support ID(s) to which the newly created case administrator will be associated. By doing so you give them the right to use the Support ID(s) when opening cases on behalf of your company.

User-added image

When the changes are saved, the new case administrator will be created and associated with the selected Support ID(s). Please note that if the specified user is not yet registered on veeam.com, they will have to complete the registration by following the corresponding link that they will receive by email. Should this be the case, the newly added case administrator will be able to access My Account and open cases only after confirming the registration.

If you would like to share a Support ID with one or several existing case administrators at the same time, please use the button Add administrator in the License view. Then, select administrators for this Support ID. Please note that the number of case administrators is limited – there can be no more than 10 case administrators per Support ID.

User-added image

You can also assign several Support IDs at a time to one of your case administrators. For this please click Add Support ID in the Case administrator view.

User-added image

How do you remove case administrators from licenses?

A case administrator can be removed from a license. Once this is done they will no longer be able to manage support cases for this Support ID (pic.1). Please note that you cannot remove other license administrators marked with a lock sign (pic.2).

User-added image

You can also remove a case administrator from all your licenses at once by following the link Delete administrator in the Case administrator view. Please note that you will not see this link if the user is a license administrator.

User-added image

What rights do case administrators have?

  • Case administrators can open, update and close support cases for the licenses assigned to them
  • Case administrators can also manage cases created by other case and license administrators
  • Case administrators can view your licenses but cannot manage them
  • Case administrators cannot view and manage other case administrators

More Information

Starting in Mar. 2017, only case administrators and license administrators will be able to submit support cases. Please make sure to define valid case administrators for your Veeam licenses.

"The request was aborted: Could not create SSL/TLS secure channel" after installing Windows Updates

$

0

Challenge

After installing the security Windows Updates released in September or October 2016, outgoing HTTPS connections from Veeam server to vCenter and NetApp storages may fail with

The request was aborted: Could not create SSL/TLS secure channel.

Any other HTTPS connections may be affected as well.

Cause

After installing one or more of the following security updates:

2012 R2 and Windows 8
KB3185331
KB3188743
KB3174644

2008 R2 and Windows 7
KB3185278
KB3185330
KB3192391
KB3175024
KB3172605

Please note that Windows Monthly Quality Rollups may replace the aforementioned updates. For more information consult Microsoft Update Catalog.

If the public key length is shorter than 2048 bytes (e.g. RSA 512), Windows may cancel the HTTPS connection.

Solution

To fully resolve the problem, regenerate vCenter or NetApp certificates so that the public key length is at least 2048 bit.
Please note that KB3172605 update causes issues with SHA-1 certificates even with the longer public key. For that one, you may want to generate the SHA-2 certificate.

As a workaround, you can uninstall the updates if you have them installed.

Warning: Partition exceeds disk layout

$
0
0

Challenge

The following warning is thrown during backup job execution:

Partition <number> exceeds disk <number> layout by <number> bytes

Cause

Veeam Endpoint Backup can determine a volume being allocated incorrectly on the disk. As a result you may get the warning above in the backup log. You may ignore it, but it is recommended that you follow the solution provided below.

Solution

To correct the allocation issue you can run a Windows built-in shrink operation for the volume that exceeds the disks layout.
  1. Open Windows Disk Management from Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management > Disk Management.
  2. Identify the volume to shrink. Warning message contains the sequential partition number which can be associated with the volume allocated on the disk. In most cases such partition is the last volume in the disk layout.
  3. Calculate the amount of space to shrink. Warning message displays the size in bytes and shrink operation is calculated in Megabytes, so you have to convert bytes to Megabytes and round the result. Divide the value indicated in the warning by 1048576 and round it to get an integer.
  4. Right-click the affected volume and choose Shrink Volume. Specify the value you calculated earlier and click Shrink.
  5. When the shrinking operation completes, re-run the backup job to verify the result.
For example: Warning says Partition 2 exceeds disk 0 layout by 1024000 bytes

According to the Disk Management, Partition 2 is volume C:

User-added image

Dividing 1024000 by 1048576 and rounding to the integer would give the result of 1 MB.

Preforming a 1MB shrink of  the volume C:

More Information

If you have further questions, open a support case as follows:
  1. Right-click the Veeam Endpoint Backup icon in the system tray and select Control Panel.
  2. Click the Support link at the top of the window.
  3. Click Technical Support to submit a support case to the Veeam Support Team directly from the product.

Backup of passive node of Microsoft Exchange Database Availability Group does not truncate transaction logs

$
0
0

Challenge

Transaction logs do not get truncated after backup.
Microsoft Exchange VSS writer reports zero databases in its metadata on the passive node.
Microsoft Exchange Replication service VSS writer is disabled and it is not present in the list of VSS writers (vssadmin list writers) on both active and passive nodes.

Solution

Enable the Microsoft Exchange Replication service VSS writer. This VSS writer is enabled by default when you install DAG, however legacy backup software might need this writer to be disabled and that could be the reason why it was disabled manually.

Open Registry Editor and navigate to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\ExchangeServer\v14\Replay\Parameters (Exchange 2010)
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\ExchangeServer\v15\Replay\Parameters (Exchange 2013)
Change DWORD value named EnableVSSWriter from 0 to 1.
Then restart the Microsoft Exchange Replication service.
