Purpose

This article documents new features, enhancements, and fixes deployed for the Veeam Intelligence backend logic.

Since all Veeam Intelligence updates are server-side, no updates to Veeam Backup & Replication or Veeam ONE are required to take advantage of the changes described in this article.

Release Information

2024-12-03

Starting with this release, the Veeam AI Assistant has been renamed to Veeam Intelligence.

Veeam Intelligence Basic Mode for Veeam ONE

Veeam Intelligence includes a new online search tooling for Veeam online technical documentation, instead of vectorizing these documents. Allowing for real-time, always up-to-date answers based on these documents.

Veeam Intelligence Advanced Mode for Veeam ONE

Available currently only in Veeam ONE, it allows customers to talk to their Data Protection Data. Below is a full list of supported use cases:

  • Threat Center Information — Query information about Threat Center widgets, including Data Platform Scorecard and the sections within, Malware Detections and detailed locations and values, RPO Anomalies, and SLA Compliance Overview.
  • System Overview — Query general information about the Veeam ONE server and installation.
  • Alarm Management — Get all alarm templates and active triggered alarms and drill down into triggered alarms for child objects.
  • Protected Data Inventory — Retrieve lists of all protected virtual machines, computers, file shares, object storages, and applications
  • Backup and Replication Servers — Query all Veeam Backup & Replication servers and check for best practice compliance.
  • Cloud Resource Management — Access lists of cloud VMs, file shares, and databases across public cloud environments.
  • Cloud Protection Policies — Retrieve protection policies for VMs, file shares, databases, and networks within the public cloud.
  • Backup Jobs — Access lists of all VM backup jobs, cloud backup jobs, and backup copy jobs, including child jobs of backup copy jobs.
  • Replication and Tape Jobs — Retrieve replication jobs (both VM and Cloud Director), backup to tape, and file/object to tape jobs.
  • Policy-Based Jobs — Get all continuous data protection (CDP) policies, agent backup policies, and agent policy child jobs.
  • Advanced and Application Backup Jobs — View jobs for application backups, including log backups and specific transaction log jobs.

Enhancements

  • AI Model — The backend AI model now uses GPT-4o.

2024-01-22

Enhancements

  • Trial license support — backup servers with trial licenses are allowed to use the Veeam AI Assistant functionality for the duration of the license.
  • Continuous improvements to enhance the quality of responses.

Resolved Issues

  • Certain combinations of Socket and VUL licenses are not accepted by the licensing validation service, preventing the use of the Veeam AI Assistant.

2023-12-25

Enhancements

  • REST and PowerShell code analysis —  users may now submit their REST API or PowerShell based scripts created for backup server management along with the explanation of the problem that needs fixed. The Veeam AI Assistant will analyze the code to identify the issue and suggest modifications that may help to resolve the problem.
  • REST code generation — the Assistant now supports generating code for managing backup server using the REST API. While Assistant can generate code in any programming language requested by the user, using Python delivers the best results. The generated code can be tailored to the customer's needs by providing comprehensive, informative, and detailed requests.

    Usage Examples:
    • How do I get an access token for using REST API?
    • Please write a Python script to get information about my failed backup jobs.
    • Please write a Python script using VBR Rest API to get all detected "Infected" events from the malware detection component that happened after 2024-01-16 00:00.

Veeam Backup & Replication Upgrade Paths

Tenants of Veeam Cloud Service Providers

If your Veeam Backup & Replication installation is connected to a Veeam Cloud Service Provider, contact your Service Provider before upgrading to ensure that the intended upgrade will not break compatibility.

A tenant cannot be on a newer version of Veeam Backup & Replication than the Service Provider.

Purpose

This article documents the upgrade path to be taken to get to the most recent version of Veeam Backup & Replication.

Solution

End of Support Upgrade Path

If you are using a version of Veeam Backup & Replication (VBR) that has reached its End of Support (EOS) and cannot be directly upgraded to a supported version, you will need to install a new instance of VBR using the latest VBR version.

Clarification: If the Upgrade Instructions in the User Guide for a currently supported version of VBR outlines an upgrade path from an older, unsupported version, this upgrade pathway is still considered supported. This article provides details on upgrade processes for such situations, as long as a currently supported version of VBR facilitates a direct upgrade from these older versions.

For example:

  • When VBR version 11a was supported, it provided an upgrade path from VBR version 9.5 Update 4b. However, VBR version 12 does not support upgrading directly from 9.5 Update 4b. As a result, after VBR 11a reached EOS, the upgrade path for 9.5 Update 4b was removed from this document.
  • VBR version 12.0, which is currently supported, allows upgrading directly from VBR version 10a. Thus, although VBR 10a is no longer supported itself, the upgrade details for 10a are included in this document because an upgrade to VBR 12.0 from that version is officially supported.

This table lists the Veeam Plug-ins for Enterprise Applications organized by their build number and the corresponding Veeam Backup & Replication version's ISO in which they were packaged.

Note: The table on this tab only displays entries for changes in Plug-ins for Enterprise Applications build numbers. This means that some Veeam Backup & Replication versions may be missing because a plug-in's version did not change between Veeam Backup & Replication releases. If you prefer to view a list of all Veeam Backup & Replication releases and the corresponding Plug-ins for Enterprise Applications packaged with each version, switch to the 'View by Veeam Backup & Replication Release' tab.

Version
ISO Name The ISO filenames in this list are accurate to the best of our ability. However, please note that there may be discrepancies in cases where a Veeam Backup & Replication version's ISO had to be repackaged, resulting in a change in the date stamp within the filename. It is important to be aware that the Cumulative Patch PYYYYMMDD may not always match the date stamp in the filename.

This table lists every  Veeam Backup & Replication releases that has included Veeam Plug-ins for Enterprise Applications, along with the corresponding versions of those plugins that were included.

Note: The table on this tab may contain redundant entries as plug-in versions do not always change between Veeam Backup & Replication cumulative patch releases. If an entry is not present for a plug-in under a specific version of Veeam Backup & Replication, it indicates that the corresponding plug-in had not been released yet (e.g., Veeam Plug-in for Microsoft SQL was first released with Veeam Backup & Replication 12).

Failed to collect disk files location data. Timeout exceeded.

KB ID: 4637
Product: Veeam Backup & Replication | 12.2 | 12.3
Published: 2024-08-28
Last Modified: 2024-12-09

Challenge

A Backup from Storage Snapshot (BfSS) job in Veeam Backup & Replication (VBR) for a vSphere virtual machine (VM) fails with the error:

Failed to collect disk files location data. Timeout exceeded.

Cause

This error is displayed when the disk file location collection task, Map Disk Region, within the vSphere environment takes longer to complete than the timeout for that task allows.

When backing up a vSphere VM using BfSS, VBR has the ESXi host retrieve metadata about the layout of VM disks on the storage (physical addresses of data blocks). The timeout instituted by VBR ensures that if this task takes longer than expected or gets stuck, the individual VM task will fail in order to prevent the job from stalling and delaying the processing of other VMs in the job.

Solution

Investigating Slow Disk File Location Collection

The performance of the disk file location collection is directly tied to the Map Disk Region events that occur within the vSphere environment, both their quantity and how quickly they are completed. Each Map Disk Region task maps the beginning and end point of a contiguous section of blocks on the storage associated with the VMDK. Therefore, if a snapshot is present before the job begins or the VMDK is heavily fragmented, the number of Map Disk Region tasks increases.

The following are likely to increase the number of Map Disk Region tasks that will occur, or how fast they are completed:

  • A snapshot exists on the VM prior to the job starting.

Processing a VM with a snapshot present is fully supported; however, that snapshot's presence will impact the "Collecting disk file location" stage of any BfSS job.
  •  Fragmentation of the VMDK on the datastore (not guest level).
  • Issues with the storage underlying the datastore.

Adjusting Timeout

If, after investigating the list of potential causes above, the timeout continues to cause the task to fail, you may choose to change the timeout by creating and adjusting the registry value below on the Veeam Backup Server.

Key Location: HKLM\SOFTWARE\Veeam\Veeam Backup and Replication\
Value Name: SanCollectDiskMappingTimeoutSec
Value Type: DWORD (32-Bit) Value
Value Data (Dec.): 10800 [default]

Notes:

  • No reboot or service restart is required; the new timeout value will be used during the next job run.
  • The value data is in seconds. The default value is 10800, which is equal to 3 hours.

Enable Automatic Failover from BfSS if Snapshot is Present

Starting in Veeam Backup & Replication 12.3, the software can be configured to automatically failover from Backup from Storage Snapshot processing to regular processing if a snapshot is detected on the VM during job startup.

To enable this functionality, configure the following registry value on the Veeam Backup Server:

Key Location: HKLM\SOFTWARE\Veeam\Veeam Backup and Replication\
Value Name: SanNoBFSSIfSnapshotExists
Value Type: DWORD (32-Bit) Value
Value Data: 1

  • 0 = Disable failover from BFSS. (Default)
  • 1 = Enable failover from BFSS if snapshot exists.
New-ItemProperty -Path 'HKLM:\SOFTWARE\Veeam\Veeam Backup and Replication\' -Name 'SanNoBFSSIfSnapshotExists' -Value "1" -PropertyType DWORD -Force

More Information

Tips and Advice
  • Considering that a snapshot being present will nearly always drastically increase the number of Map Disk Region tasks that must occur, customers using Backup from Storage Snapshot are strongly encouraged to monitor active snapshots closely.
  • As an alternative to creating snapshots on VMs during maintenance, consider using Quick Backup, which can be triggered directly from the vSphere Client using the Veeam Plug-in for VMware vSphere Client.
  • When adjusting the timeout value, if you are unsure how high it needs to be set, set it to 86400 (1 day) to allow the task plenty of time to complete. Then, review the job after it is completed and identify how long the "Collecting disk file location" task took, add 10%, and reconfigure the timeout to that discovered value.

Upgrade to Veeam Backup & Replication 12.3 Fails During "Step 1 of 7: Installing PostgreSQL server 15.10-1..."

KB ID: 4698
Product: Veeam Backup & Replication | 12.3
Published: 2024-12-10
Last Modified: 2024-12-10
Article Applicability

This article documents an issue where the Veeam Backup & Replication 12.3 upgrade fails while attempting to install PostgreSQL 15.10-1.

  • This issue will only occur for Veeam Backup & Replication deployments that are not utilizing a local PostgreSQL instance. For example, deployments of Veeam Backup & Replication that still utilize a local Microsoft SQL Server instance or connect to a remote PostgreSQL or Microsoft SQL Server instance.

  • With the introduction of Microsoft Entra ID backup in Veeam Backup & Replication 12.3, the installer will automatically deploy a local PostgreSQL instance if one does not already exist. This ensures that an initial default Microsoft Entra ID backup repository can be configured.

  • Deployments of Veeam Backup & Replication that are already utilizing a local PostgreSQL instance will not experience this issue, as the installer detects the existing local PostgreSQL instance connection details and configures the Microsoft Entra ID backup repository to use that same PostgreSQL instance.

Challenge

While upgrading Veeam Backup & Replication to version 12.3, the installer fails during "Step 1 of 7: Installing PostgreSQL server 15.10-1".
  • Reviewing the latest VbrSuite installer log file found in C:\ProgramData\Veeam\Setup\Temp\, the following error is found:
[ERROR] Failed to install PostgreSQL server 15.10-1.

  • Checking the System event logs with Event Viewer, the following information message is observed:
    Event ID 1000
Attempt to execute Windows Script Host while it is disabled.

Event ID 1000

Cause

In the scenario described, the upgrade fails to install PostgreSQL 15.10-1 because the Windows Script Host has been disabled.

The disabling of the Windows Script Host is recommended as part of the Security & Compliance Analyzer and is disabled when using the script to automate the implementation of Security & Compliance Analyzer Recommendations from KB4525.

However, as documented in the Security & Compliance Analyzer documentation:

Before disabling Windows Script Host, make sure that this service is not used by the backup infrastructure components you plan to install on the backup server. If there are any (for example, PostgreSQL database), install these components first, then disable the service. To update these components, you need to enable the service temporarily.

Solution

If the upgrade fails as described, do not attempt to upgrade Veeam Backup & Replication a second time without first completing the resolution steps in this article.

However, if you have already run the upgrade a second time, please review the More Information section of this article.

Post-Upgrade Failure Remediation

If the Veeam Backup & Replication upgrade has failed while attempting to install PostgreSQL, and you have not attempted to run the upgrade a second time, follow the steps below to complete the upgrade:

  1. If the Installation Failed screen is still open, click Finish to close it.
Click Finish
  1. Enable the Windows Script Host by removing the Enabled registry value.
This can be done manually or by using the provided PowerShell command:
    • Delete the Registry Value named 'Enabled' within the following registry keys:
      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Script Host\Settings\
      HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows Script Host\Settings\
    • PowerShell script to delete the registry value from the two possible registry keys:

  1. Uninstall the partial PostgreSQL 15 installation. (appwiz.cpl)

Note: During the uninstall, the error "Error deleting service postgresql-x64-15" will appear multiple times. Click OK on each error and allow the uninstall to complete.
Uninstall Error
Click OK on the errors that appear, and allow PostgreSQL to uninstall.
  1. With Windows Script Host enabled and the partial PostgreSQL 15 install removed, perform the Veeam Backup & Replication 12.3 upgrade again. The upgrade should now successfully deploy PostgreSQL 15.10-1 and complete the upgrade.

Note: After the upgrade completes, you are welcome to disable Windows Script Host once more.

More Information

Note for customers who ran the upgrade a second time, and it succeeded:

  • If the Veeam Backup & Replication upgrade was attempted a second time and succeeded, the upgrade to 12.3 can be considered complete. However, because the initial upgrade attempt failed and left behind a partial PostgreSQL deployment, during the second upgrade attempt, the installer will have detected that PostgreSQL deployment and skipped installing PostgreSQL. This failure to install PostgreSQL leads to the issue described in KB4653, wherein the Microsoft Entra ID backup repository is left unconfigured.
  • We recommend that you uninstall the partial PostgreSQL 15 deployment.
You can verify it's a partial deployment of PostgreSQL 15 because the service postgresql-x64-15 will not be present.
  • If you plan to use Microsoft Entra ID backup, you'll need to create a PostgreSQL 15 instance and configure the Microsoft Entra ID backup repository yourself. Keep in mind that you'll need to enable Windows Script Host to install PostgreSQL. Also, you can use the PostgreSQL installer included on the Veeam Backup & Replication ISO (D:\Redistr\x64\PostgreSQL\15.10-1).
After you deploy a PostgreSQL 15 instance to act as the Microsoft Entra  ID backup repository, remember to review the Adjusting PostgreSQL Instance Configuration for advice on ensuring the PostgreSQL instance is configured for optimal performance to handle the backup load.

"Windows Script Host must be enabled for the duration of setup process"

KB ID: 4699
Product: Veeam Backup & Replication | 12.3
Published: 2024-12-16
Last Modified: 2024-12-16

Challenge

While attempting to Install or Upgrade Veeam Backup & Replication, the installer displays the message:

Windows Script Host must be enabled for the duration of setup
process, Refer to KB4699 for more information https://
www.veeam.com/kb4699.
error

Cause

This message is displayed when the Installer detects that the Windows Script Host has been disabled.

Solution

  1. There is no need to close the installer; it can remain open with the error displayed during the following step.
  2. Enable the Windows Script Host. (Does not require a reboot.)
This can be done manually or by using the provided PowerShell command:
    • Delete the registry value named 'Enabled' which may present within either of the following registry keys:
      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Script Host\Settings\
      HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows Script Host\Settings\
    • PowerShell script to delete the registry value from the two possible registry keys:
Note: If the registry value is not present as a user-level setting within HKCU, the script will throw an error that can be disregarded.
#Remove System-wide Setting
Remove-ItemProperty -Path "HKLM:\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Script Host\Settings" -Name "Enabled"
#Remove User-level Setting (If it exists)
Remove-ItemProperty -Path "HKCU:\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Script Host\Settings" -Name "Enabled"
solution
  1. Click "Ok" on the error about Windows Script Host and then click Next in the Veeam Backup & Replication installer.
If the installer was closed, rerun the Veeam Backup & Replication installer.
  2. After the install or upgrade completes, you are welcome to disable Windows Script Host once more using the following script:
Note: This script will only recreate the registry value within HKCU if it previously existed there; otherwise, it will throw an error that can be disregarded.
# (Optional) Re-disable Windows Script Host after install/upgrade completes.
New-ItemProperty -Path 'HKLM:\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Script Host\Settings' -Name 'Enabled' -Value "0" -PropertyType DWORD -Force
New-ItemProperty -Path 'HKCU:\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Script Host\Settings' -Name 'Enabled' -Value "0" -PropertyType DWORD -Force

"Failed to convert [Not Settable] to UUID."

KB ID: 4694
Product: Veeam Backup & Replication | 12.3
Published: 2024-12-17
Last Modified: 2024-12-17

Challenge

Veeam Backup & Replication task interacting with Proxmox VE host fails with:

Failed to convert [Not Settable] to UUID

Cause

This occurs when the Proxmox VE host has an empty bios UUID, or the reported bios UUID value is unparsable.

Solution

  1. Remove workers (if any) from the Veeam Backup & Replication configuration.
  2. Remove the Proxmox VE server from the Veeam Backup & Replication configuration.
  3. Review the Proxymox VE server's configuration and ensure that it has a BIOS UUID set correctly, per the vendor's documentation.
  4. Execute the following command on the Proxmox VE host to verify it reports a BIOS UUID correctly:
dmidecode -s system-uuid
  1. Add the Proxmox VE server to Veeam Backup & Replication again, deploy workers, and proceed as normal.

Adding Linux Server Without Elevation: "Installing Installer service Error"

KB ID: 4369
Product: Veeam Backup & Replication | 12.3
Published: 2022-12-14
Last Modified: 2024-12-17

Challenge

When adding a Linux Server to Veeam Backup & Replication using a non-root account and not enabling the "Elevate account privileges automatically" option, the following error is shown:

  • RPM-based Linux distributions
Installing Installer service Error: Error: error: can't create transaction lock on /var/lib/rpm/.rpm.lock (Permission denied)
    • Exit code: 1

Installer Install Fail
  • Debian-based Linux distributions
Installing Installer service Error: Error: dpkg: error: requested operation requires superuser privilege
    Exit code: 2

debian based installer install error
Example of Non-root with no elevate
Example of a credential configuration that will cause the error.

Cause

This error occurs when the account specified on the SSH Connection page of the 'New Linux Server' or 'Edit Linux Server' wizard is a non-root account with the option "Elevate account privileges automatically" not selected. Which is required for the persistent Veeam Data Mover service to be installed.

Solution

Key Points

  • The installation of the Installer service persistent Veeam Data Mover service, while recommended, is only strictly required if the Linux server will be used as a Hardened Repository or as a Backup Proxy. If the Linux server is not used for either of those purposes, the error regarding the failure to install the Veeam Data Mover service when using a non-root account without elevation may be disregarded.
  • If the persistent Veeam Data Mover service cannot be installed on the Linux server, a non-persistent Data Mover agent will be uploaded to the /tmp/ folder and run via an SSH connection each time Veeam Backup & Replication interacts with the Linux Server.

    Note:
Use of the non-persistent Data Movers requires that perl be installed.

For more information regarding Veeam Data Movers, please review: Veeam Backup & Replication User Guide: Veeam Data Movers

Resolution Options

Option 1: Continue Using a Non-root Account Without the Elevate Option

If the choice to not enable the "Elevate account privileges automatically" option was intentional, the error regarding failure to install the Veeam Data Mover service should be ignored.

  • When a non-root account without the "Elevate account privileges automatically" option enabled is used by Veeam Backup & Replication to communicate with a Linux server being used as a Linux Repository, the repository path must be one that the account can access without the need to sudo. Attempting to create a repository for a path that the non-root account does not own will succeed, but any job that attempts to use that repository will fail with the error:
Error: can not create /<path>/<jobname> : No such file or directory

Option 2: Enable the Elevate Account Privileges Automatically Option

Enabling the "Elevate account privileges automatically" option will allow Veeam Backup & Replication to install the persistent Data Mover Service, improving the performance and reliability of communication with the Linux server.

Option 3: Use "Single-use credentials"  — (Most Secure Option)

Note: The Single-Use Credential option is documented in the same section as Immutability because they are both parts of the "Hardened Repository" model. However, it is possible to use Single-Use Credentials without using Immutability.

When adding or editing the Linux server within the Veeam Backup & Replication console, on the SSH Connection tab, click Add and select the option for "Single-use credentials for hardened repository." Then provide credentials for a non-root account that can elevate via sudo. This account will be used one-time by Veeam to deploy the persistent Data Mover Service and not stored within the Veeam Backup & Replication configuration database.

More information regarding Single-Use Credentials is available here:

Granular sudo Permissions for Installing Veeam Plug-ins for Enterprise Applications using Protection Groups

KB ID: 4702
Product: Veeam Backup & Replication | 12.3
Published: 2024-12-18
Last Modified: 2024-12-18

Challenge

This article provides an example granular ‘sudoer’ configuration for the Linux account that will be used by Veeam Backup & Replication when installing Veeam Plug-Ins for Enterprise Applications using a Protection Group, specifically for Veeam Plug-in for Oracle RMAN and Veeam Plug-in for SAP HANA on Linux.

Note: This article documents sudo permission requirements for installation of the plugins only. Operational permissions for the Enterprise Application Plug-Ins can be found here:

Solution

Alternate Solution: Use Certificate-Based Authentication
As an alternative to password-based authentication and granular sudoer configuration, you have the option to install Veeam Plug-ins for Enterprise Applications on Linux computers using certificate-based authentication. To do so, you must install Veeam Deployer Service on the computer and then add the computer to a protection group of the Individual computer type. In this case, Veeam Backup & Replication does not require an SSH connection to install the Veeam Plug-ins for Enterprise Applications.

How to Back Up ARM Role Assignments with Veeam Backup for Entra ID

KB ID: 4683
Product: Veeam Backup & Replication | 12.3
Published: 2024-12-03
Last Modified: 2024-12-20

Challenge

This article documents the additional configuration necessary to enable Veeam Backup for Microsoft Entra ID to back up relationships between protected resources and management groups as part of the backup scope.

By default, Veeam Backup for Microsoft Entra ID does not back up relationships between protected resources and management groups.

Solution

Part 1: Set Permissions

The application must have a Reader Role in the Azure Root management group. This can be added automatically or manually depending on whether or not the Tenant has been added to the Inventory already:

Automatic

This method can be used when the Tenant has not yet been added to Veeam Backup & Replication Inventory.

  1. The user should be able to assign roles in all Azure subscriptions and management groups associated with the tenant.
To learn how to grant this privilege, see Microsoft Azure Docs.
  2. Close all Veeam Backup & Replication Consoles (veeam.backup.shell.exe)
  3. Create the following registry value on the Veeam Backup Server:
    • Key Location: HKLM\SOFTWARE\Veeam\Veeam Backup and Replication\
    • Value Name: ProcessARMRoleAssignments
    • Value Type: String Value (REG_SZ)
    • Value Data: true
New-ItemProperty -Path 'HKLM:\SOFTWARE\Veeam\Veeam Backup and Replication\' -Name 'ProcessARMRoleAssignments' -Value "true" -PropertyType 'String' -Force
  1. Open the Veeam Backup & Replication Console.
  2. Add the Tenant to Inventory.
Manually

This method must be used when the tenant has already been added to the Veeam Backup & Replication Inventory node.

  1. Assign the Reader role to the application in the Root management group.
To learn how to grant this privilege, see Microsoft Azure Docs.

Part 2: Enable Processing

After setting the Reader role, you must enable the processing of ARM RoleAssignments.

  1. Enable the processing of ARM RoleAssignments by adding the option key "ProcessArmRoleAssignments" to the appsettings.json file.
You must create the file manually if it doesn't exist in the Plugin folder:
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Veeam\Backup Transport\x64\Plugins\EntraId\

Example of appsettings.json file content:

{
"EntraIdEntitiesBackupSettings": {
"ProcessArmRoleAssignments": true
}
}
