Challenge

This article explains how Veeam Backup for Microsoft Office 365 supports backups of Veeam Backup for Microsoft Office 365 tenants with the Multi-Geo feature enabled.

Solution

  • Exchange Online
Veeam Backup for Microsoft Office 365 fully supports Exchange Online mailbox backups for Multi-Geo configured tenants.
  • SharePoint Online / OneDrive for Business
For Multi-Geo tenants, Veeam Backup for Microsoft Office 365 supports SharePoint Online Personal sites and OneDrive for Business backups with the following limitations:
    • Personal sites must be selected for processing as User objects. For more information, see the Veeam Backup for Microsoft Office 365 User Guide, section Back Up Following Objects.
    • After data migration, a full backup will be performed for the site on the next backup job run. This limitation is caused by an inability to get the required information on site changes after its migration to a different region. At the same time, backup consistency is preserved without any data duplication.

Veeam Recovery Media shows command line only

$

0

Challenge

When you boot from the Veeam Recovery Media, the Veeam Agent machine displays the command line interface instead of the Veeam Recovery Media screen.

User-added image

Cause

Comodo FirewallComodo Antivirus Software or Central Management Software for Comodo may block some of the Veeam Agent processes including the Veeam Recovery Media creation process. When you create the recovery media, no errors are displayed. But when you boot the machine from the recovery media, the booting may result in the command line interface instead of the Veeam Recovery Media screen.

Solution

Check the Veeam Agent machine for the running Comodo software:

  1. Look through the tray for the Comodo tray application.
  2. Check installed products using the Apps and Features option of the Windows settings or wmic product get name, version command.
  3. Check the Task Manager for Comodo processes.
  4. Run the fltmc instances command and check the output for Comodo filter drivers.

If the Comodo software has the tray application, disable the application. Do not click Exit in the context menu of the tray application. It may close the tray application without stopping Comodo processes. As an option, you can uninstall the Comodo software to create the bootable Veeam Recovery Media. After the recovery media is created, you can re-install the Comodo software.

It is worth checking if the standalone Comodo Antivirus or Firewall is used or the software is managed by Central Management Software for Comodo. In some cases, configuring exclusions for the Veeam Agent in the Comodo protection software may be sufficient to create the bootable recovery media. Required exclusions are described in this Veeam KB article.

  • If you deal with the standalone Comodo Antivirus, exclusions should be added in the HIPS section:
User-added image
  • If you deal with the Central Management Software for Comodo, the exclusions should be added in the Containment section:
User-added image

After exclusions are added, re-create the Veeam Recovery Media and check if it is possible to boot the machine from it.

How to collect VSS trace

$
0
0

Challenge

This article explains how to collect additional VSS diagnostic data with the VSSTrace tool that is a component of the Microsoft Windows Software Development Kit (SDK).

Cause

Veeam products use Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) for a variety of tasks. Sometimes it is necessary to go through the underlying VSS processes to check what method experiences issues.

VSSTrace can be used to trace VSS applications and get a detailed output that contains possible VSS error codes and events on Windows 7 and later. For details, see this Microsoft article.

Solution

Here are the steps on tow to collect diagnostic data:
  1. Download the VSSTrace tool.
  2. Save the file on the Veeam Agent machine. For example, C:\Users\Username\Downloads.
  3. Run Command Prompt as Administrator.
  4. Change directory to the folder with the VSSTrace tool. For example, cd C:\Users\Username\Downloads
  5. Launch the VSSTrace tool with the following command:
    vsstrace +f 0xffff -l 255 +indent -o vsstrace.log
Mind that Log Level must be 255. For details about additional log levels, see this Microsoft Enterprise Platforms Support article.
  6. Start the backup job
  7. Once the backup job fails, press [Ctrl + C] to stop logs collection. The output file can be found in the folder where VSSTrace is saved (Step 2).

Google Cloud VMware Engine (GCVE): considerations and limitations

Challenge

Google Cloud VMware Engine (GCVE) is a fully compliant and certified full-stack cloud infrastructure sold and supported by Google. You can deploy VMware vSphere-based workloads, natively, in a dedicated SDDC on Google Cloud and utilize the same applications, tools, processes, and policies that you use today. This environment requires specific preparations to allow Veeam Backup & Replication 10 or later to work with it. Except for the challenge listed below, you can interact with it in Veeam Backup & Replication like with any other vSphere environment to backup, restore, and replicate VM workloads.

GCVE uses standard VMware vSphere, vSAN, and NSX versions to operate the service. General compatibility is given for any Veeam Backup & Replication version that supports the vSphere version operated by GCVE.

Consider that Veeam has tested GCVE only with Backup & Replication v10 and, therefore, recommends to use this version or later.

The virtual lab creation wizard is affected due to the impossibility to select a network at the Networking step when using either the Basic single-host or Advanced single-host option.

Cause

GCVE does not allow creating local networks.

Solution

As a workaround, at the Networking step, use the Advanced multi-host option with distributed switches. For more information, see this Veeam article.

Challenge

This article documents how to manually backup a Microsoft SQL Database.

Solution

Using SQL Server Management Studio

  1. Open Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio (May need to be installed separately)
  2. Connect to the "ServerName\Instance" of the server that has the DB you want backed up.
  3. Expand the Databases tab to get to the DB you want to back up.
  4. Right click the desired DB --> Tasks --> Back Up...
  5. Set "Backup Type" to "Full"
  6. Go through the rest of the General and Options tab information to set the options to what you want.
  7. Click OK to start the Backup process.

Using sqlcmd

If SQL Management Studio is not installed, the Veeam database can be collected using SQLCMD:

  1. Check the name of the SQL instance and Veeam database in windows registry
    • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\VeeaM\Veeam Backup and Replication\SqlDatabaseName
    • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\VeeaM\Veeam Backup and Replication\SqlInstanceName
    • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\VeeaM\Veeam Backup and Replication\SqlServerName
  2. Open an Administrative Command Prompt and connect to SQL instance:
    SQLCMD -S (SqlServerName)\SqlInstanceName

    User-added image
Note: In case you have SQL server authentication enabled you may define username using '-U' parameter.

  3. Backup the Veeam database:
BACKUP DATABASE SqlDatabaseName TO DISK = 'C:\VeeamDB.bak'
    GO

    User-added image

More Information

Alternatively you can copy the .MDF (database file) and .LDF (database temp file) to a different location.  The default path for these files are "C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL10_50.'YourInstanceName'\MSSQL\DATA\" where "YourInstanceName" is the name of the SQL instance.
