Hyper-V Guest processing skipped (check guest OS VSS state and integration components version)

$

0

Challenge

Guest VMs will fail to engage VSS when application-aware image processing is enabled generating an error:

Error    Guest processing skipped (check guest OS VSS state and integration components version) (System.Exception)

Cause

This issue has multiple potential causes, usually related to the Integration Services version of the failing guest server. This issue occurs when Application-Aware image processing is utilized in the Backup or Replication job settings for transactional quiescence using Microsoft VSS

Solution

Integration Services

Make sure integration services are up to date. The Hyper-V Integration Services log in the event viewer of the Hyper-V host that maintains the failing VM.  Look for the name of the failing server with any error events referencing the integration components being out of date. The following is an example of the event text.
Hyper-V Volume Shadow Copy Requestor connected to virtual machine ‘VM-Name’, but the version does not match the version expected by Hyper-V (Virtual machine ID). Framework version: Negotiated (3.0) - Expected (3.0); Message version: Negotiated (3.0) - Expected (4.0). This is an unsupported configuration. This means that technical support will not be provided until this problem is resolved. To fix this problem, upgrade the integration services. To upgrade, connect to the virtual machine and select Insert Integration Services Setup Disk from the Action menu.

If any Integration Service components are listed as out of date, update them on the guest server by following the Steps listed below. Please note this process applies to Windows Server 2008 R2, Server 2012 and Server 2012 R2

To determine the Integration services version on the guest:
•  2008R2: On the Hyper-V host server, browse to C:\windows\system32\vmms.exe > open the proprieties of the file and go to the ‘details’ tab.
•  2012 & 2012 R2: Run this powershell command on the host containing the VMs as  Administrator:
o    Get-VM | ft Name, IntegrationServicesVersion

User-added image

Guest OS
The following steps and checks are to be performed within the Guest OS of the VM that is failing to backup.

NOTE:
Server 2012 R2 guests are not supported for VSS-enabled (AAIP) backups on 2008 R2 hosts due to integration components incompatibility. Please see http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc794868(v=ws.10).aspx for the list of supported guest OSes.

•  Make sure Windows is running the most recent service pack.
 •  Open Disk Management (diskmgmt.msc), check for the following:

1. View the properties of a volume, then goto the Shadow Copies tab.
Check the settings for each Volume in the Shadow Copies section to make sure the Volume and the Storage area match.

User-added image

2.  No Dynamic disks. Dynamic disks cannot utilize VSS and be backed up live. (The VHD(X) itself can be dynamic, the volume within the Guest OS cannot.)
3.  No FAT or FAT32 Volumes. All volumes must be NTFS or ReFS. The System Reserved partition must have more than 42MB of space free. If less than 42MB is free, try creating a shadow copy for the volume.

User-added image

 •  Open Services (services.msc) and start “Hyper-V Volume Shadow Copy Requestor” service. If it is ‘Running’, restart it.
 •   If the VM Guest OS is 2012 and the Host is 2008R2:
View the Guest OS Application Event logs for errors with source:
vmicvss
Event ID: 13.
If this error is present, open the Registry Editor (regedit) and navigate to:
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\SystemRestore\
Within that key create a new DWORD:
Name: ScopeSnapshots
Value: 0
Note: If the SystemRestore key is not present, you will have to create it.

  •  If all other troubleshooting fails, restart the virtual machine. Once the VM has powered on and all services are started, restart the “Hyper-V Volume Shadow Copy Requestor” service.

VM Configuration
The following steps and checks are to be performed from the Hyper-V host level.

                   •    Make sure the VM has a SCSI controller. One must be present, even if there are no devices to use the SCSI controller.
The error will present itself in the Hyper-V VMMS > Admin Event log. Example:
“The virtual machine ' Vm-Name' cannot be hot backed up since it has no SCSI controllers attached. Please add one or more SCSI controllers to the virtual machine before performing a backup. (Virtual   machine ID).”

        •   Within the Virtual Machine settings verify that the “Backup (Volume Snapshot)” option is enabled.

User-added image

Make sure that the virtual machine files (VHD files) are not sitting in the root folder of the CSV, as this may prevent correct snapshot creation due to permission restrictions. We strongly recommend to keep virtual machine files in separate folder.

Verification
Use these steps to verify whether your troubleshooting has worked without having to run a Veeam backup or replication job. If the Hyper-V writer caption for the VM displays the wrong state, you can contact Veeam Support to verify your troubleshooting based on this article, or contact Microsoft support for additional troubleshooting steps.

Perform the following steps on the Hyper-V host that the VM is running on.

1.  Open an Administrator Command Prompt
2.  Run the command:
Diskshadow /L C:\writers.txt
3.  Run the command:
list writers

When this completes you can then open writers.txt and locate the VM name in the section for the Hyper-V writer. For each VM there's a "Caption" entry that should read "online" or "child partition", and not "offline" or "saved state".

Seeding Backup or Backup Copy to HP StoreOnce

$
0
0

Challenge

Seeding to HP StoreOnce from removable media results in the following error:

Failed to check if item [reference to vbk on the HP StoreOnce] exists.

Cause

HP StoreOnce repositories are configured with the option to "use per-VM backup files" by default.  Copying and pasting backup files from removable media to the HP StoreOnce and then mapping a backup or backup copy job to those files may result in job failure if the removable media was not also configured with the "use per-VM backup files" option, when added as a repository.

Solution

Prior to creating the seed for a backup or backup copy job, set the repository backed by removable media to "use per-VM backup files" by selecting the checkbox in the advanced properties.

User-added image

Then perform a backup or backup copy to the removable media.  The removable media should then be sent to the site where the HP StoreOnce is located and the seed can be copied to the HP StoreOnce using the Backup & Replication files view.

User-added image

After the files are copied, the backup can be manually imported (https://helpcenter.veeam.com/backup/vsphere/importing_backups.html), and a backup or backup copy can be mapped to the imported files (https://helpcenter.veeam.com/backup/vsphere/backup_copy_mapping_file.html).

Installation Fails with Patched Database

$
0
0

Challenge

When you apply a patch to Veeam Backup & Replication, the database is upgraded and its version number is changed. If you attempt to reinstall Veeam Backup & Replication, the installation may fail because it is unable to start the Veeam Backup Service. In the service log, you see:

[DB|ERROR] Cannot use database [VeeamBackup], because it was created with later version of the product: product version 633, database version 638. (Veeam.Backup.DBCreator.CDatabaseException)

Cause

The Veeam Backup & Replication configuration database table dbo.Version is incremented with each update to the database. The Veeam Backup Service will not run if the database version is newer than expected.

Solution

There are three possible workarounds:

1.  Create a new database during installation, apply the appropriate patch, and then restore the configuration backup. Note that configuration backup does not retain the session history.
2.  Create a new database during installation, apply the appropriate patch, and then detach and replace the empty database with the existing (patched) database.
3.  Revert the configuration database version, install Veeam Backup & Replication, and then apply the patch.

To allow installation with the existing database, the table dbo.Version should be set to the version contained in the installer. We recommend backing up your database prior to making any changes. To change the version number:

1.  From SQL Management Studio, connect to the instance containing the Veeam configuration database (default names are VEEAM or VEEAMSQL2008R2)
2.  Expand “Databases”
3.  Right-click “VeeamBackup” > New query.
4.  Paste the appropriate query (below) and press “execute” or F5.

To install 6.5.0.109:

Use VeeamBackup
UPDATE [Version] SET current_version = 633

To install 7.0.0.690:

Use VeeamBackup
UPDATE [Version] SET current_version = 1179

To install 8.0.0.817:

Use VeeamBackup
UPDATE [Version] SET current_version = 1870

If you had version 7.0.0.871 (Patch 4) installed prior to the re-installation, after running the query above and installing 7.0.0.690, run the following query prior to applying Patch 4.

Use VeeamBackup
UPDATE [Version] SET current_version = 1200

If you had version 8.0.0.2084 (v8 Update 3) installed prior to the re-installation, after updating the database version to 1870 (as above) and installing 8.0.0.817, run the following query prior to applying Update 3.

Use VeeamBackup
UPDATE [Version] SET current_version = 2022

To install 9.0.0.902:

Use VeeamBackup
UPDATE [Version] SET current_version = 2754

NOTE:  This is an operation that Veeam Support is happy to walk through with you and this KB is provided mostly as a convenience for customers wishing to perform the above operations themselves. If you would like to walk through this process with a Veeam Support Engineer, please do not hesitate to open a case with us via the Customer Portal. cp.veeam.com

Do not attempt to revert to an older release of Veeam Backup & Replication. Attempting to install 6.1 with a database that has been upgraded to 6.5 or install 6.5 with a 7.0 database is likely to fail or corrupt the database. We recommend backing up the database prior to upgrading.

Tape Library is shown as offline

$
0
0

Challenge

The Tape Llibrary with user-created media pools are shown as "offline". A duplicate of the Tape Library, without media pools is shown online instead.

Cause

Issue can occur from changing device hardware, firmware, or other such updates to components outside of Veeam. The device ID can be modified and thus causing a "new" Library/drive to show in the console.

Solution

Solution 1:
  1. Remove all tapes from Catalog (This might require the Tape Device to be powered down so all media is "offline")
  2. Delete the Media Pools on the Offline Library
  3. Remove the Offline Library (Right click + Remove Library)
  4. Create New Media Pools on the Online Library
  5. Catalog the Tapes to regain the Veeam Catalog and see the information inside Veeam's UI
While this solution is cumbersome, it is the supported method as each Media Pools is directly associated with the parent Device.

Solution 2:
  1. Upgrade to Version 9
In Version 9, the media pools are now "global" and will be associated with all Veeam Tape Servers.

Backup jobs stop working with NetApp SteelStore Cloud Integrated storage after upgrading to Veeam version 9

$

0

Challenge

Aafter upgrading Veeam Backup & Replication to version 9, backup jobs to a NetApp repository based on a SteelStore host platform fail. The following error message can be seen in the job logs:
“Error    File not found. File name: \\PathToShare\BackupFolder\JobName.vbm”

The NetApp log containts the following error:
“rename not allowed between pinned share and unpinned share, source = /fs/PathToShare/BackupFolder/JobName.vbm_1_tmp destination = /fs/PathToShare/BackupFolder/JobName.vbm”

Cause

The .vbm file contains backup chain metadata, so this file has to be updated during every job run. To prevent possible metadata corruption, the update is divided in two steps: saving content to .vbm_tmp and renaming vbm_tmp to .vbm. Such renaming is not allowed on the SteelStore repository due to a NetApp limitation. This limitation only applies to SteelStore versions older than 3.3. Veeam Backup & Replication version 9 is officially supported by NetApp starting with SteelStore 3.3.

Solution

Upgrade SteelStore to version 3.3. If this is not possible, you can select a different repository for your backup jobs or continue to use Veeam Backup & Replication version 8.

Challenge

This KB article documents the procedure for restoring Application Items for Exchange 2003 and Exchange 2007. The Veeam Explorer for Microsoft Exchange does not support these versions of Exchange. In order to restore items for Exchange 2003/2007 you must use the SureBackup + U-AIR restore method.

Solution

Please Note:
• WebDAV must have been enabled on the Exchange 2003/2007 server when the restore point being restored from was created in order to restore using U-AIR.
• If WebDAV was not enabled, or you need a .pst, you can start the SureBackup job and use Outlook installed on the Veeam server to connect the Exchange server in the isolated network to export the data to PST.
• Veeam Backup & Replication must have an Enterprise or Enterprise Plus license to perform this restore.
• You will need the U-AIR wizard for Microsoft Exchange, this package does not come with Veeam Backup & Replication v8. You must contact Veeam Support (support.veeam.com) in order to acquire this package.

Once you’ve downloaded the U-AIR Wizard, perform the following to process the restore:
This KB contains the SureBackup Configuration Guide for 8.x https://www.veeam.com/kb2047

1. Create a Virtual Lab.
     http://helpcenter.veeam.com/backup/80/vsphere/index.html?create_vlab.html
     https://www.veeam.com/videos/5-easy-sessions-for-modernizing-your-data-protection-configuring-your-first-virtual-lab-2110.html

2. Create an application group.
     http://helpcenter.veeam.com/backup/80/vsphere/appgroup_create.html

Add to it the following servers in the order listed here:
     • Domain Controller w/ Global Catalog role
     • Exchange Mailbox server
     • Exchange CAS server (if separate).

Note: In the application group settings, enable the "Domain Controller" role for the DC and remove all test scripts.
For the Exchange server, leave all roles unchecked. Disable the IP boot verification tests on all servers in the application group, and set the application initialization timeout for all servers other than the DC to 0 seconds.

3. Create a Surebackup job.
     http://helpcenter.veeam.com/backup/80/vsphere/create_surebackup_job.html

Configure it to use the Virtual Lab and Application Group configured in the previous steps.
     Note:
     • On the Application Group tab, enable the “Keep the application group running once the job completes” option.
     • Do not configure any Linked Jobs

4. Run the Surebackup job.
Note: If you need to restore to a specific restore point choose the “Restore to…” option.

5. Wait for the job to report that all VMs in the SureBackup job are “Started”

6. Start the Exchange AIR Wizard.
From an administrative command line, run the following command:

  "C:\Program Files\Veeam\Application Restore\Exchange Restore\Veeam.AIR.Exchange.exe" /admin

Challenge

When attempting to connect to the Veeam Backup & Replication server using the console the connection fails with the error:

Failed to connect to the Veeam Backup & Replication server:
No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it <IP>:9392

User-added image

Cause

There are multiple causes for this failure to connect, the following is a list of the most common causes:

1. The server the console is installed on cannot reach the Veeam Backup & Replication server due to network limitation.
2. The server the console is installed on cannot resolve the hostname or FQDN of the Veeam Backup & Replication server entered.
3. A firewall is preventing communication between the server where the console is being run and the Veeam Backup & Replication server.
4. On the Veeam Backup & Replication server the Veeam Backup Service is not running.

There may be other causes, please contact Veeam Technical Support if you find a cause not listed.

Solution

Connectivity/DNS
From the server where the console is installed attempt to ping the IP/Hostname/FQDN of the Veeam Backup & Replication server specified when using the Veeam Backup & Replication console. If unable to ping the Veeam Backup & Replication server, please resolve the network level issue.

Firewall
Please check all firewalls that exist between the server where the Veeam Backup & Replication console installed and the Veeam Backup & Replication server.

A tool such as PortQry can be used to test if port 9392 can be reached on the Veeam Backup & Replication server from the console server. https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/confirmation.aspx?id=17148

Veeam Backup Service
Connect to the Veeam Backup & Replication server and make sure that the Veeam Backup Service is running. If it is stopped, start it. If when attempting to start the server it fails, Check the SQL Service for the instance Veeam is using.

More Information

If none of the above methods resolve the issue, please open a support case for further investigation. If the service is not running, this qualifies as a Severity 1 issue provided you do not have any other Veeam consoles and meet the criteria for a severity 1 issue as defined here: https://www.veeam.com/veeam_software_support_policy_pg.pdf

Challenge

This article provides a method to change the repository where backup files are stored.

Solution

To manually move Veeam Backup and Replication backup files and continue using the same job, follow these steps

1. In Backup Infrastructure > Backup Repositories, create a new repository for the new location where backup files will be located.

2. Manually move the backup files to the new repository path. Keep in mind that there will be folders created inside the directory/path for job names. If your repository is declared as E:\Backups, Job A will go to E:\Backups\Job A.

3.Rescan the new repository.

How to: Gather Logs for Cloud Connect Service Providers

$
0
0

Challenge

This Knowledge Base article explains the locations from which a Cloud Connect Service Provider should collect log files for the support on Client/Provider cases. Listed below is the location of logs Support will typically need from a Service Provider to investigate.

Solution

Service Provider Environment

For providers with newly-configured infrastructure, or a small number of clients, use the built-in log generator tool to gather logs from all managed servers related to the issue. It is important to gather logs from cloud gateways, repositories, and other relevant infrastructure in addition to the backup server.

User-added image

Providers with a larger number of clients can use this tool, but it will produce a large (multi-GB) log bundle. To avoid this, see “Advanced Service Provider Location”, below.

Please let Veeam Technical Support know the name of the tenant involved in the case, as it is listed in the console

Tenant Environment

For failing jobs:
Export logs for the job (backup, backup copy, or replication) that is having an issue.

User-added image

For restores and replica failovers:

Export a log bundle for the backup or replication job (as above), and then manually collect the following directories from the Veeam Backup server.

Starting in %ProgramData%\Veeam\Backup\:

  • Entire directory "CloudConnect" (if it exists)
  • Entire directory with the name of the VM that was backed up or replicated

Advanced Service Provider Location

Some files listed may not be present if they are not applicable to your issue, but make sure you are looking at the correct server for each different directory or filename. Some files will have several rotations, with the oldest files archived to .zip or .gz.

Veeam Backup and Replication Server:

Collect these files in the root of %ProgramData%\Veeam\Backup\:

  • Svc.VeeamBackup* (filenames beginning with “Svc.VeeamBackup”)
  • Zip files named "<date stamp>_Svc.VeeamBackup"
  • CloudAppliance*

In rare cases, other files in this directory may be relevant, so it is prudent to include anything with a recent modified date.

Collect the contents of these folders:

  • %ProgramData%\Veeam\Backup\Console\ (if using remote console, collect from that machine as well)
  • %ProgramData%\Veeam\Backup\CloudConnect\
  • %ProgramData%\Veeam\Backup\CloudConnectService\<tenant_name>\
  • %ProgramData%\Veeam\Backup\CloudConnectService\ (excluding subfolders for other tenants)

Cloud Gateway Servers:

  •  %ProgramData%\Veeam\Backup\Svc.VeeamGateSvc*

WAN Accelerator (if applicable):

  • %ProgramData%\Veeam\Backup\Svc.VeeamWANSvc*.log

Repository Servers (for backup and backup copy jobs):
Check which server is listed as the Host for the Repository in the console: Backup Infrastructure > Backup Repositories. Collect the entire content of these folders:

Windows:

  • %ProgramData%\Veeam\Backup\CloudConnectService\<tenant_name>\
  • %ProgramData%\Veeam\Backup\CloudConnectService\ (excluding subfolders for other tenants)

Linux:

  • /var/log/VeeamBackup/CloudConnectService_<tenant_name>_* (may be multiple directories)

More Information

Logs from the Network Extension Appliances are automatically copied to their controlling Veeam Backup & Replication server, so in most cases it is not necessary to gather logging from these appliances manually.

How to locate and collect VSS/VIX log files from Guest OS

$
0
0

Challenge

Need to locate VSS and VIX log files for troubleshooting purposes.

Cause

During the process of investigating an issue that occurs when using Application-Aware Image Processing, additional logs must be gathered manually from the Guest OS for the VM that is failing to backup.

These logs are NOT automatically captured by the Support Wizard, so they must be manually collected.

Solution

The VeeamVssSupport and VeeamVixProxy contain details related to the VM on which they are found, as such they must be collected directly from the Guest OS of the VM that is being investigated.

Note: If Application-Aware Image Processing was disabled during internal troubleshooting please enable Application-Aware Image Processing and run the job again to update the log files within the Guest OS.

The following actions are to be performed within the Guest OS of the VM that is being investigated. Please note that no Veeam Backup and Replication task should be running against the guest in question during this collection process. This will interfere with the accuracy of the information.

──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────

1.  Navigate to the following directory:

Windows Server 2003: %allusersprofile%\Application Data\Veeam\Backup
Windows Server 2008 and up: %programdata%\Veeam\Backup

User-added image

──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────

2.  Collect files matching the following Syntax:

For Veeam Backup & Replication v8 or newer:

VeeamGuestHelper_ddmmyyyy
VeeamVixProxy_ddmmyy

For Veeam Backup & Replication versions older than v8:

VeeamVssSupport_ddmmyyyy
VeeamVixProxy_ddmmyy

User-added image

──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────

3.  Open an elevated command prompt and run the following commands:

vssadmin list writers > C:\vsswriters.txt
vssadmin list providers > C:\vssproviders.txt
vssadmin list shadows > C:\vssshadows.txt
vssadmin list shadowstorage > C:\vssshadowstorage.txt

──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────

4.  Hyper-V Cases: Export Windows Event Logs as shown here: http://www.veeam.com/kb1873.

──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────

5.  Collect the logs from steps 2-4, bundle them in a compressed file, and submit them.

The logs can be submitted by:
•  Email (smaller than 3MB)
•  Customer Support Portal (support.veeam.com)
•  FTP (Provided by support engineer, remember to send email after upload.)

Create VSS processing exclusion for vCenter Database

$
0
0

Challenge

The vCenter database in most cases will be automatically excluded from the Application-Aware Image Processing process, preventing the database from being frozen or quiesced. If this does not happen automatically backing up the VM where the vCenter database is stored may fail with the following error.

" VSSControl: Failed to prepare guest for freeze, wait timeout 900 sec."

More information regarding this error can be found in http://www.veeam.com/KB1377

Solution

The solution below will instruct you on how to enable and use the DBExclusion menu that is built-in to Veeam Backup & Replication v7 and higher.

1. Close the Veeam Backup & Replication console.

2. Open Regedit.exe

3. Navigate to the key HKLM

4. Add a new DWORD ‘EnableDBExclusions’>

5. Set the Value to 1

User-added image

6. Close the Registry Editor and open Veeam Backup & Replication

7. Open “Database Exclusions” from the Main Menu
User-added image

8. In the window that pops up, click Add.

9. Specify the DNS name (case sensitive) or IP address, and Database Name (case sensitive) that you wish to exclude from VSS Freezing and being Quiesced. 10. Specify the Database name (case sensitive) that you wish to exclude from application-aware image processing.

User-added image

On next job run the specified database will be excluded from the Application-Aware Image Processing freeze task.

Appliance Mode (Hotadd) Requirements and Troubleshooting

$
0
0

Challenge

Appliance mode (hotadd) fails or configuration assistance is needed.

The following is shown in the statistics window while processing a VM:

Hot add is not supported for this disk, failing over to network mode...

The following can be found within the logs:

“output: --wn:Hot add is not supported for this disk, failing over to network mode...\n”

Solution

Requirements:
  • If the Veeam Proxy being used to process the source VM is on a VMFS 3 datastore it must be formatted with proper block size to be able to mount the largest virtual disk of the hot added VMs.
o    1MB block size – 256GB maximum file size
o    2MB block size – 512GB maximum file size
o    4MB block size – 1024GB maximum file size
o    8MB block size – 2048GB maximum file size
  • The Proxy being used to back up the VM must be a Virtual Machine on a host that is able to access the datastore where the source VM’s disks are stored.
  • In versions 5.1 and older of vSphere, the maximum supported VMDK size is 1.98 TB.
  • The disks that are to be hotadd must be SCSI. IDE drives are not compatible with hotadd.
  • VMware Tools must be installed and up-to-date on the Veeam server and any Veeam proxies
  • Datastore needs sufficient space for a VM snapshot

Known Issues:
  • If the VM disk resides on a Vvol the Hot Add Proxy VM's configuration files must also be on the same Vvol.
  • Hotadd may fail if any disk was created with a newer hardware version than the VM being backed up. For example, if a disk was moved from a hardware version 8 VM to a hardware version 7 VM. To resolve, upgrade the hardware version of the VM.
  • A single SCSI controller can have a maximum of 15 disks attached. To run multiple concurrent jobs with more than 15 disks, you need to add more SCSI controllers to your Veeam Proxy server that is responsible for hot adding the disks. (kb.vmware.com/kb/1037094)
  • In case of standalone host connection (no vCenter added to the console), you can only hot add disks of VMs which are located on the same host as the proxy server.  This may require additional proxy servers to be configured on each host in the environment.
  • Hotadd may fail if you are trying to back up the VM through the host added as a standalone server into Veeam Backup Infrastructure but actually being managed by vCenter. The following error message can be found in the source agent log:
Reconfigure attempt failed for VM "" with Vmomi::MethodFault::Exception ("vim.fault.HostAccessRestrictedToManagementServer")
  • Hot Add may fail if the VM you are trying to back up and the proxy server are in different clusters.
  • Virtual Appliance backup job fails after you’ve cloned or restored your VBR server. The reason for that is incorrect UUID reference for Veeam Backup VM which can be found in the following registry key of the Veeam server. Please see http://www.veeam.com/kb1332
  • Hot Add fails if VM disks being backed up don't have unique ddb UUIDs across the Vcenter, for example if such VMs were deployed from a single template to different hosts.  Please refer to this Vmware article for details: http://kb.vmware.com/kb/2006865
