Challenge

When backing up a virtual machine running a Microsoft SQL server with disabled TLS 1.0 using the application-aware processing, a backup job may fail with the error code 0x80004005 [TLS 1.0]. Such an error may occur due to the SQL log truncation failure.

The GuestHelper logs in the C:\ProgramData\Veeam\Backup\VeeamGuestHelper_<dd.mm.yyyy>.log file will contain lines such as:
4/26/2016 4:48:52 AM   4004  INFO                    Connecting to mssql, connection string: Provider='sqloledb';Data Source='(local)\SQL2012SP1';Integrated Security='SSPI';Persist Security Info=False, timeout: 15
4/26/2016 4:49:08 AM   4004  WARN                                      Code = 0x80004005
4/26/2016 4:49:08 AM   4004  WARN                                      Code meaning = Unspecified error
4/26/2016 4:49:08 AM   4004  WARN                                      Source = Microsoft OLE DB Provider for SQL Server
4/26/2016 4:49:08 AM   4004  WARN                                      Description = [DBNETLIB][ConnectionOpen (SECCreateCredentials()).]SSL Security error.
4/26/2016 4:49:08 AM   4004  WARN                        COM error:  Code: 0x80004005

Cause

The SQLOLEDB Provider does not use TLS 1.2. For more information, see the Microsoft blog post.

Solution

As a workaround, you can use the Native SQL Client Provider by adding the following value to the registry key on the GUEST OS VM:

Location: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Veeam\Veeam Backup and Replication
Value: UseSqlNativeClientProvider
Type: DWORD
Data: 1

No server restart is required.

Release Notes for Veeam Backup & Replication 9.5 Update 4b

Known Issues
  • Backup to certain tape libraries fails with error 1117. Restore from encrypted tapes fails if a tape library has its hardware encryption setting is set to "Application managed" (data stored on tapes is however consistent, so the restore can be performed successfully once the hotfix is deployed). For more information and to download the hotfix, see KB2981

Cause

Please confirm that you are running version 9.0 Update 2 (build 9.0.0.1715) or later prior to installing this update. You can check this under Help | About in Veeam Backup & Replication console. After the successful upgrade, your build number will be 9.5.4.2866.

When upgrading from versions earlier than Update 4a, you will also see the vendor name changed from Veeam Software AG to Veeam Software Group GmbH, reflecting the legal company name change. Please note that the name change has also resulted in a change of the code signing certificate.

Solution

Veeam Backup & Replication 9.5 Update 4b is a cumulative hotfix rollup that addresses issues reported by customers on the original build of Update 4 and Update 4a, and adds the following new features and enhancements:

Platform support
  • Microsoft Windows 10 May 2019 Update and Microsoft Windows Server version 1903 support as guest VMs, and for the installation of Veeam Backup & Replication and its components.
  • Microsoft Windows 10 May 2019 Update and Microsoft Windows Server version 1903 support by the Veeam Agent for Windows 3.0.2 (included in the update).
  • Linux Kernel version 5.0 support by the updated Veeam Agent for Linux 3.0.2 (included in the update).
  • Ubuntu 19.04, SLES 15 SP1, RHEL 8 and openSUSE Leap 15.1 distributions support in the Veeam Backup & Replication agent management functionality.
  • VMware vCloud Director 9.7 compatibility at the existing Update 4 feature level.
  • VMware vSphere 6.5 U3 readiness based on the pre-release build. The official support will still require the full regression testing performed on the generally available (GA) build. UPDATE: vSphere 6.5 U3 GA is officially supported with Update 4b.
  • VMware vSphere 6.7 U3 readiness based on the pre-release build. The official support will still require the full regression testing performed on the generally available (GA) build. UPDATE: vSphere 6.7 U3 GA is officially supported with Update 4b.
Application support
  • Oracle 19c on Linux support for RMAN-based and OCI-based application-aware processing, redo log backup and Veeam Explorer for Oracle in most configurations. Due to the recent availability of Oracle 19c, testing of DataGuard and RAC configurations is still being performed. This record will be updated with further information and the official support statement based on results.
  • Oracle 19c on Windows support for RMAN-based and OCI-based application-aware processing, redo log backup and Veeam Explorer for Oracle in basic configurations only. Due to the most recent availability of Oracle 19c for Windows, testing of advanced configurations (DataGuard, RAC, ASM, Pluggable DB, flashback, virtual accounts) is still to be performed. This record will be updated with further information and the official support statement based on results. UPDATE: ASM, Pluggable DB, flashback and virtual accounts are officially supported with Update 4b.
Cloud integrations
  • Veeam Backup & Replication will now periodically update the list of supported Amazon AWS regions from the Veeam update server. The list will be updated as Veeam QC validates compatibility with the newly added Amazon region. This functionality requires that you opt in for automatic product update check via the existing Check for product and hypervisor updates periodically check box in the Notification settings.
Storage integrations
  • Dell EMC Unity OE version 4.5 support.
  • The proprietary NFS client has been updated for compatibility with the Western Digital IntelliFlash (formerly Tegile) Universal Storage API plug-in. The plug-in will be made generally available along with the Update 4b release.
In addition, Update 4b addresses over 100 bugs reported by customers and found during the internal testing, including the following common support issues:
  • Tape virtual full backup reliability and performance, tape drive detection logic, WORM media support and NDMP backup reliability.
  • Agent-based backup jobs may create unnecessary full backups under certain circumstances, or fail in the environments with very long backup repository paths.
  • Scale-out backup repository race condition causes synthetic backup operations to dead lock when a very powerful backup proxy server is used.
  • PowerShell Direct calls may hang under certain circumstances in the application-aware processing logic of Hyper-V backup.
  • Veeam Agent for Windows: CBT driver block map reset issue; inability to failover to backup cache when it is hosted on a USB storage; inability to open a support case from the product UI under a restricted user account; improved command line tool for the Recovery Media creation.
  • Veeam Agent for Linux: Dell servers with NUMA enabled may crash during the snapshot creation; intermittent backup jobs failures when processing XFS volumes; entire computer backup failure on Ubuntu 18.04 with Intel Software RAID; enhanced encrypted devices compatibility through redesigned device enumerator; CLI improvements for backup scope specification.
  • NetApp ONTAP Snapvault retention processing in 7-mode clusters.
  • Performance and resource usage optimizations in a number of backup infrastructure components.
Update 4b is a cumulative update, meaning it includes all enhancements delivered as a part of Update 4a. For the detailed information on new features and enhancements included in the original release of Update 4, please refer to this What’s New document.

Azure VMware Solution by CloudSimple. Considerations and Limitations

$

0

Challenge

Azure VMware Solution by CloudSimple is a vSphere environment running on Microsoft Azure hardware. This environment requires specific preparations to allow Veeam Backup & Replication v.9.5 Update 4b or higher to work with it. Besides the challenge listed below, you can interact with it in Veeam Backup & Replication like any other vSphere environment to backup, restore and replicate VM workloads.

Azure VMware Solution by CloudSimple uses standard VMware vSphere, vSAN and NSX version to operate the service. General compatibility is given for any Veeam Backup & Replication version that supports the vSphere version operated by Azure VMware Solution by CloudSimple.

Consider that Veeam has tested Azure VMware Solution by CloudSimple only with Backup & Replication v.9.5 Update 4b and therefore this version or higher is recommended.

No networks are selectable at the Networking step when using either the Basic single-host or Advanced single-host option.

Cause

Azure VMware Solution by CloudSimple does not allow to create local networks.

Solution

As a workaround, at the Networking step, you can use the Advanced multi-host option with distributed switches. For more information, see this Veeam article.

Replication jobs fail with "The operation is not allowed in the current state" message

$

0

Challenge

A replication job fails with the "The operation is not allowed in the current state" error message.

Cause

When a replication job runs for the first time, Veeam Backup & Replication creates a VM replica on the target host. This VM replica has the same configuration as the original VM. If the version of the original VM hardware is higher than the versions supported on the target host, the VM replica cannot be created.

You can check the hardware version of the original VM in vCenter. For this, select the VM and open the Summary tab. In the VM Hardware section, you can see the following information:
User-added image

The full list of ESXi/ESX hosts and compatible VM hardware versions is available in this VMware KB article.

Solution

You can resolve the issue in the following ways:
  • Downgrade the version of the original VM hardware. For details, see this VMware KB article;
  • Upgrade the target host.

The specified network name is no longer available

$
0
0

Challenge

When accessing backup files on a CIFS (SMB) repository, Veeam Backup and Replication reports either of the following errors:

The specified network name is no longer available. (code 59, 0x8007003B)
An unexpected network error occurred. (code 64, 0x80070040)

Veeam Backup & Replication uses SMB connections for backup repositories, guest processing, and when first adding a Windows server to the Backup Infrastructure. This KB only addresses error messages that occur in the context of a backup file path, such as:

The specified network name is no longer available. Failed to read data from the file [\\10.0.0.81\backups\SQL VM New\SQL VM New2015-09-23T200441.vbk].

Note: If the failure is occurring in a tape job and no UNC path is specified in the error message, please contact Veeam Support.

Cause

These error messages are passed directly from Microsoft Windows, and indicate that some unknown problem led to a sudden failure of the connection between the repository gateway (acting as Server Message Block client) and the SMB server (typically a NAS appliance).

User-added image

There are many possible reasons the SMB connection might fail:

  • Network issues are a common reason, constituting a potentially unlimited variety of hardware failure or network hardware configuration problems; such issues may or may not involve packet loss.
  • Simple firewalls may block a connection consistently, while advanced firewalls might destroy an existing connection seemingly at random or under very specific conditions.
  • Either client or server might close the connection due to one of a number of timeouts or retry limits either at the SMB protocol layer or the underlying TCP layer; such limits are often encountered due to network congestion or excessive load on the storage.
  • The NAS may stop responding entirely due to hardware or software issues; it may in some cases be misconfigured. Appliances using post-process deduplication may stop responding if the process starts prematurely.
  • In specific circumstances, various GPO security policies might limit the connection, for instance - Microsoft network client: Digitally sign communications. Make sure that source and target hosts are able to communicate using this policy, otherwise, in case of any network failures, consider this to disable. More QoS policies can be enabled on SMB client or target, creating unreasonably low bandwidth.

Solution

Common Workarounds

  • If the repository share is located on a Windows server, try creating a Windows repository on that server instead of a CIFS (SMB) repository.
  • Reboot both the SMB client machine (repository gateway) and the SMB server (NAS).
  • If other storage is available, try writing the backup to the other storage as both verification of the problem and as a temporary workaround.
  • Consider reconfiguring the NAS as iSCSI or an NFS mount on a separate Linux repository server, depending on what is supported by the NAS. This change may involve data loss. iSCSI usually offers the best performance.
  • Writing backup files to SMB shares over a slow or unreliable network, such as a WAN connection, is not recommended. Deploy a gateway server with a fast (Ethernet 100Mbps+) connection to the share.
  • To rule out interference from a firewall, temporarily disable any software firewalls (including certain antivirus products) on the SMB client or server, as well as any hardware firewalls between them.

Registry Settings

These registry values must be created on the the SMB gateway, which is specified in the repository settings as “Gateway server”. If the gateway is set to “automatic”, add these registry values to all Windows servers managed by Veeam Backup & Replication.

  • NetUseShareAccess
For Veeam B&R 8.0.0.917 or later, the following registry value allows Data Movers to open backup files by a resilient method similar to the Windows net use command.

    Key: HKLM\SOFTWARE\Veeam\Veeam Backup and Replication\
    DWORD: NetUseShareAccess
    Value: 1

Note: If credentials are required, specify Domain\User or Host\User in the repository settings. .\User credentials are not supported with NetUseShareAccess. For example, specify “NAS-01\Admin” instead of “.\Admin”.

  • SessTimeout
This increases the amount of time the Windows SMB client will wait for a response from an SMB server before it aborts the connection. The default timeout is one minute.
    Note: Reboot Required

    Key: HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanWorkstation\Parameters\
    DWORD: SessTimeout
    Value: 600

Note: This is a value in seconds. Try a value of 600 decimal (10 minutes).

  • TcpMaxDataRetransmissions
This increases the number of times the Windows TCP implementation will retransmit a data segment before it aborts the connection.
    Note: Reboot Required

    Key: HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters
    DWORD: TcpMaxDataRetransmissions
    Value: 10 (Default: 5)

Additional Troubleshooting

  • Open the repository settings and enable Limit combined data rate. If you can measure the existing data rate, start with a limit between 50% and 70% of that value to verify that reducing throughput prevents the error. If the network is still congested after limiting the repository data rate, and the source of the congestion is due to other Veeam processes, enable throttling for the relevant connections.
  • Change the gateway server in the repository settings to test whether particular routes to the share perform better than others. For example, if connections from any Windows server on an ESXi host tend to fail, but connections from a physical Windows machine do not fail, the root cause probably involves that ESXi host or its network connection.
  • If the SMB connection consistently fails after 10 hours, it may be due to expiration of a Kerberos service ticket. The most reliable workaround is to create non-domain credentials on the NAS, then specify those credentials in the repository settings. For more information and other possible workarounds, see this SAMBA mailing list discussion and the Authentication Expiration Timer heading in this MSDN blog post.
