SharePoint backup jobs fail with: The remote server returned an error: (429)

KB ID: 4442
Product: Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 | 7.0
Published: 2023-04-08
Last Modified: 2023-04-10

Challenge

After upgrading to Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 7, backup jobs that protect SharePoint Online objects (Websites, OneDrive, Personal Sites, Microsoft Teams) are interrupted with the following error:

The remote server returned an error: (429)

Cause

In some cases, the default Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 7 retry timeout may prove insufficient, leading to an excessive number of requests that could trigger higher throttling. Should this happen, the SharePoint Online throttling policy might hinder the requests sent by Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 during the backup.

Solution

The following hotfix will improve retry timeout handling to minimize throttling and eliminate "429" errors.

  1. Ensure you are running Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 7 P20230302 (7.0.0.2914).
  2. Ensure that there are no Backup jobs or Restore sessions running.
  3. On the Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 server, stop the following services:
    • Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 Service
    • Veeam Backup Proxy for Microsoft 365 Service
    • Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 REST API Service
  4. Download the hotfix via the button below.
  5. Extract the fix to: C:\Temp\KB4442\
  6. After extraction, unblock the files using the following PowerShell cmdlet:
 Get-ChildItem -Path "C:\Temp\KB4442\" -Recurse -Force | Unblock-File
  1. Back upEither zip the old dll or rename it to add .kb4442original after the .dll extension. and replace the the DLLs in each of the following locations:
    • C:\Program Files\Veeam\Backup365
      • Veeam.Azure.ActiveDirectory.v12.0.0.dll
      • Veeam.Engine.v12.0.0.dll
      • Veeam.SharePoint.Restore.dll
    • C:\Program Files\Veeam\Backup365\Packages\Proxy
      • Veeam.Azure.ActiveDirectory.v12.0.0.dll
      • Veeam.Engine.v12.0.0.dll
    • C:\Program Files\Veeam\Backup and Replication\Explorers\SharePoint

      • Veeam.SharePoint.Restore.dll
    • C:\Program Files\Veeam\Backup and Replication\Explorers\Teams
      • Veeam.Azure.ActiveDirectory.v12.0.0.dll
      • Veeam.Engine.v12.0.0.dll
      • Veeam.SharePoint.Restore.dll
  2. Start the services that were stopped in Step 3.
