Veeam Agent for Microsoft Windows 5.0 Can’t Be Started or Installed After Upgrade to Windows 11
Challenge
After upgrading to Windows 11, the Veeam Agent for Microsoft Windows service may fail to start.
The following errors can be found in C:\ProgramData\Veeam\Endpoint\Svc.VeeamEndpointBackup.log:
Error Failed to start service. Error Error occurred during LocalDB instance startup: SQL Server process failed to start. Error (System.Exception)
Additionally, the following entry is found in C:\Windows\System32\config\systemprofile\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server Local DB\Instances\VeeamEndPoint\error.log:
Cannot use file 'C:\...\master.mdf' because it was originally formatted with sector size 4096 and is now on a volume with sector size 16384. Move the file to a volume with a sector size that is the same as or smaller than the original sector size.
Cause
Solution
Veeam Agent for Microsoft Windows 6.0, released in February of 2023 alongside Veeam Backup & Replication 12, uses SQLite database instead of Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Express LocalDB. The new database engine, SQLite, is not affected by the issue documented in this article.
We strongly advise all customers to upgrade to the latest version of Veeam Agent for Microsoft Windows and Veeam Backup & Replication.
