Overview
Veeam supports using Veeam Agent for Microsoft Windows and Veeam Agent for Linux to backup virtual machines running on Azure Public MEC.
Azure Public MEC is a low-latency offering, fully manageable within the Azure portal, and links to standard Azure management and services. Services available in the Azure Public MEC Edge Zone are - virtual machines, Kubernetes services, virtual networks, private links, and disks.
Azure Private MEC, a separate offering is the equivalent to Azure Stack Edge.
Veeam support for Azure Public MEC is separate to support for Azure Stack Hub, Azure Stack Edge, and Azure Stack HCI.
Note that Veeam Backup for Microsoft Azure does not currently support the backup of resources in Extended locations such as Azure Public MEC in the Azure portal due to resource type and API differences.
Installation
Veeam Agent for Microsoft Windows and Veeam Agent for Linux can be deployed using agent management via protection groups in Veeam Backup & Replication. This configuration will require network connectivity between the Veeam Backup Server and machines where agents are deployed.
You can deploy the Veeam Backup Server for agent management either in Azure from the Azure Marketplace or, if necessary, in Azure Public MEC. Ensure the appropriate networking is in place. For example, if deploying in Azure, you can peer a vNet in Azure with one in Azure Public MEC.
Should you want to deploy on-premises, you can use standard Azure networking concepts, such as a private link between this and your Azure Public MEC deployment.
Backup
You can configure a Veeam Agent for Microsoft Windows or Veeam Agent for Linux backup job as you would normally. Do note that not all restore options are available (see Restore section below).
Consider that when choosing your Veeam backup repository target that this is not located in the same environment as the one you are trying to protect. With Azure Public MEC, it is recommended that these backups are stored outside the source environment, either to Azure or another external location.
To send your backup data to Azure Blob, you can use Scale-Out Backup Repository tiering support in Veeam Backup & Replication 11.
Restore
Restore Operation | Considerations and Limitations |
Restore virtual machine | Restore support for Hyper-V, Azure Stack HCI, vSphere, AHV, or to Microsoft Azure. Direct Restore to Azure Public MEC is not supported. |
Restore individual files and folders | File-level restores for Linux require a Linux server helper host. |
Restore application items | Restore application items from a Veeam Agent backup using Veeam Explorers |
Export machine disk (VMDK, VHD, or VHDX) |
VHD restore generates dynamically expanding disks. It can be converted to fixed using Convert-VHD or third-party software for use with Azure Public MEC. Once you have a fixed-size disk, you can use Azure Storage Explorer to upload VHD. |
