Overview
Veeam supports using Veeam Agent for Microsoft Windows and Veeam Agent for Linux to backup virtual machines running on Edge Zone locations such as Azure Public MEC.
Depending on your setup, you may additionally have file shares you wish to protect. As long as networking is in place, you can do this with NAS Backup in Veeam Backup & Replication.
Azure Public MEC is a way to run dedicated hardware on-prem as an extended Azure location. You can purchase a converged rack or dedicated compute, storage, or GPU racks, allowing you to have Azure on-site. These are fully manageable within the Azure portal and link to standard Azure management and services. Edge Zone Azure Services are - virtual machines, Kubernetes services, virtual networks, private links, disks, and premium storage accounts.
Veeam Support for Azure Public MEC and Azure Edge Zones is separate to support for Azure Stack Hub, Azure Stack Edge, and Azure Stack HCI.
Note that Veeam Backup for Azure does not currently support the backup of resources in Azure Edge Zone locations due to resource type and API differences.
Installation
Veeam Agent for Microsoft Windows and Veeam Agent for Linux can be deployed using agent management via protection groups in Veeam Backup & Replication. This configuration will require network connectivity between the Veeam Backup Server and machines where agents are deployed.
You can deploy your Veeam Backup & Replication server for agent management either on-premises, in Azure Edge Zones, or in Azure itself from the Azure marketplace. Ensure the appropriate networking is in place. For example, if deploying in Azure, you can peer a vNet in Azure with one in Azure Edge Zones. If deploying on-premises, you can use standard Azure networking concepts, such as a private link between this and your Azure Edge Zone deployment.
Backup
You can configure a Veeam Agent for Microsoft Windows or Veeam Agent for Linux backup job as you would normally. Do note that not all restore options are available.
Consider that when choosing your Veeam backup repository target that this is not located in the same environment as the one you are trying to protect. With Azure Edge Zones, it is recommended that these backups are stored outside the source environment, either local to the site you wish to protect or to Azure.
To send your backup data to Azure Blob, you can use Scale-Out Backup Repository tiering support in Veeam Backup & Replication v11.
Restore
Restore Operation | Considerations and Limitations |
Restore virtual machine | Restore support for Hyper-V, Azure Stack HCI, vSphere, AHV, or to Microsoft Azure. Direct Restore to Azure Edge Zones is not supported. |
Restore individual files and folders | File-level restores for Linux require a Linux server helper host. |
Restore application items | Restore application items from a Veeam Agent backup using Veeam Explorers |
Export machine disk (VMDK, VHD, or VHDX) |
VHD restore generates dynamically expanding disks. It can be converted to fixed using Convert-VHD or third-party software for use with Azure Edge Zones. Once you have a fixed-size disk, you can use Azure Storage Explorer to upload VHD. |
