Challenge
A VM Restore to Google Compute Engine fails with the error:
Converting disks (GCE): [import-image]: <datestamp> step "translate-image" validation error: step "bootstrap" validation error: cannot create instance, bad machineType lookup: "n1-standard-2", error: APIError: googleapi: Error 404: The resource 'projects/<projectname>/zones/us-east5-a/machineTypes/n1-standard-2' was not found, notFound
Cause
The Restore to Google Compute Engine utilizes the Import Image API to create the restored VM's disk. The import-image API requires an N1 InstanceThe Import-Image API does not have a method to specify a different instance type. which is not supported by the following regions:
- europe-southwest1
- europe-west8
- europe-west9
- southamerica-west1
- us-east5
- us-south1

Solution
To work around this issue, perform the Restore to a Region/Zone that supports the N1 instance type.
