Challenge

VM Restore to Google Compute Engine fails with the error:

Converting disks (GCE): [import-image]: <datestamp> step "translate-image" validation error:
step "bootstrap" validation error: cannot create instance, bad machineType lookup: "n1-standard-2", error:
APIError: googleapi: Error 404: The resource 'projects/<projectname>/zones/us-east5-a/machineTypes/n1-standard-2' was not found, notFound

Cause

The Restore to Google Compute Engine utilizes the Import Image API to create the restored VM's disk. The import-image API requires an N1 InstanceThe Import-Image API does not have a method to specify a different instance type. which is not supported by the following regions:

  • europe-southwest1
  • europe-west8
  • europe-west9
  • southamerica-west1
  • us-east5
  • us-south1

This list is current as of the article's Last Modified date. Check Google Compute Engine: Available regions and zones for an up-to-date list.

Solution

To work around this issue, perform the Restore to a Region/Zone that supports the N1 instance type.

An up-to-date list of Regions/Zones and supported Machine Family Types can be found here.
