Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 Auto-Update Fails - "Offline thumbprint check failed: certificate is invalid"

Challenge

Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365's auto-update activated via the user interface may fail with: 

Offline thumbprint check failed: certificate is invalid.

Cause

This error is related to an ongoing update of specific Veeam certificates and certificate verification algorithms used by the update check system.

Solution

A hotfix has been created to resolve this issue and will be included in a future patch.

Until then, users have the following options:

  • Manually download and install updates from the list available on KB4106.
  • Should you want to leverage the auto-update feature, you may:
    • Wait for the patch that will include the fix.

      or
    • Install the hotfix on this article to fix the issue before the patch is released. Doing so will allow the existing Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 install to leverage the auto-update feature right away. To do so, follow the instruction below to install the hotfix.

 

Hotfix Install Instructions

  1. Ensure you are running Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 build 6.0.0.385 (P20220524)
    (should you need a fix for an earlier version, please, contact Veeam Technical Support)
  2. Ensure that there are no Backup jobs or Restore sessions running.
  3. On the Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 server, stop the following services:
    • Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365
    • Veeam Backup Proxy for Microsoft 365
  4. Download the hotfix via the button below.
  5. Extract the fix to: C:\Temp\KB4341\
  6. After extraction, unblock the file using the following PowerShell cmdlet:
Get-ChildItem -Path "C:\Temp\KB4341\" -Recurse -Force | Unblock-File
  1. Backup the original Veeam.Archiver.Core.v11.1.0.dll and replace it with the one from the fix in the following locations:
    • C:\Program Files\Veeam\Backup365
    • C:\Program Files\Veeam\Backup365\Packages\Proxy
    • C:\Program Files\Veeam\Backup365\Packages\Appliance
  2. Start the services that were stopped in Step 3.
  3. Upgrade the Backup Proxy Servers.
